In 2011, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today, there are over 4,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world.

For some bird species that migrate south after the breeding season, Brooklyn is their Miami during the cold months. Spend the early morning exploring the cemetery, looking for overwintering waterfowl, nuthatches, woodpeckers, sparrows, finches and any half-hardy birds that decided to stick around. By February we'll see some of the early north-bound birds beginning to trickle back into the area.

Green-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties.

Black in Brooklyn (Sold Out)
In honor of Black History Month, Green-Wood presents this celebration and recognition of the unique stories of black lives in Green-Wood. Although Brooklyn and New York City have long struggled with segregation and racism, they also have a history of diversity, progress, and activism. This trolley tour, led by Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman, will examine the life and accomplishments of many prominent black New Yorkers, as well as several abolitionists who fought for freedom in America.

Amy Cunningham, death educator, leads this presentation of cremation's history and its impact on present-day and future funerals. Afterward, you will have the opportunity to visit the crematory with Gema LaBoccetta, Green-Wood's Crematory Manager, then chat with Amy and other attendees at a short reception.

Make Your Own (Mini) Monument – SOLD OUT
Green-Wood is a veritable outdoor museum of stone sculptures—home to over 250,000 in all, each memorializing a life story. At this hands-on workshop, Neela Wickremesinghe, Green-Wood’s Manager of Restoration and Preservation, will offer insights into the art of stone conservation and demonstrate how her team creates replacement parts when monuments need repair. Using the same techniques, each participant will cast his/her own personal plaster ornament to take home.

Furnishing a Tomb in Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egyptian kings like Tutankhamun could have anything he wanted for his tomb. But the king’s subjects, ordinary middle-class Egyptians, were forced to make choices about the objects they included in their tombs. They wanted to guarantee their entrance to the next world, but they simply could not afford everything that royalty had. This lecture explores how Egyptians furnished their tombs on a budget. Their strategies included choosing cheaper materials, combining two or more necessary objects into one item, or even buying a coffin second hand. Examples of all these strategies will be illustrated and explained.

Batter up! To kick off the 2019 season, we welcome baseball historian Tom Gilbert, along with Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman, for a tour of Green-Wood’s ball-playing pioneers. On this trolley tour you’ll visit the monuments and gravesites of Henry Chadwick, the “Father of Baseball,” who invented the game’s scoring system; James Creighton, baseball’s first national star; Charles Ebbets, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers; and many others who played a role in making baseball America’s national pastime.

From the first woman to sing live on radio, Eugenia Farrar to the first black female doctor in New York State, Susan Smith McKinney Steward, this trolley tour celebrates the pioneering women of Green-Wood. Among the many remarkable and inspiring stories you will encounter is that of Caroline Weldon, a widowed Brooklyn artist who traveled to the Dakota Territory to become an assistant and liaison to Sitting Bull (Weldon’s story was featured in the 2017 film, “Woman Walks Ahead” starring Jessica Chastain).

Condolence letters of the nineteenth century, when death was ever present, were mainstays of life—missives of comfort written straight from the heart. Death educator Amy Cunningham will lead a practical guide to crafting messages that heal and knowing what’s best left unsaid. Along the way, she’ll share condolences written by luminaries including Thomas Jefferson, Emily Dickinson, Queen Victoria, Marcel Proust, and Ernest Hemingway.

In this illustrated talk, poet, novelist, and diplomat Homero Aridjis will share his first-hand accounts of meeting Maria Sabina, whom he sees not only as a cultural icon, but also as arguably the greatest visionary poet in twentieth-century Latin America. Aridjis’s 2013 novel Carne de Dios, centers on Sabina’s life in Huautla and her involvement with Westerners who flocked to her home to experience the hallucinogenic effects of the “magic mushrooms”.

Magicians and Mediums
In the 1850s, New York City was absolutely agog for the tale of the three young Fox sisters who claimed they heard mysterious knocking sounds that came from the spirits. (The oldest sister, Leah, and their parents, are interred at Green-Wood.) Later proven to be a hoax, the phenomenon sparked the popular and enduring movement of spiritualism. This trolley tour will explore the legacies of Spiritualism and stage magic, which often came into conflict with each other. Green-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties.

Celebrate the 200th birthday of Brooklyn’s native son and poet, Walt Whitman, through the lens of the people he worked with, wrote about, and knew best. You’ll visit two brothers, one a Union soldier and the other a Confederate, whom Walt Whitman attended to as a Civil War volunteer nurse; McDonald Clarke, the “Mad Poet” who inspired Whitman; Gabriel Harrison, the photographer of an iconic image of Whitman known as “the Christ likeness,” and many more.

When Joy Doumis and Jeremy Hammond approached Green-Wood in fall 2015 to ask if they could harvest the apples here, naturally we had to know why. To make hard cider of course! Spread across 478 acres, our urban orchard has over 150 Malus (aka apple) trees. The Public Lots Trolley Tour
Green-Wood Cemetery 500 25th Street, Brooklyn, NY, United StatesThe Green-Wood Cemetery is famous for its elaborate private burial lots and architecturally significant monuments. However, its lesser expensive public lots comprise about half of all burials at the cemetery.
Green-Wood’s Manager of Preservation and Restoration, Neela Wickremesinghe, and Director of Programs and Special Projects, Harry Weil, lead a guided exploration of these sites. The tour will highlight the "Colored Lots", seven burial lots on the cemetery’s southern border, including one for The Colored Orphans Asylum. Over 1,300 are laid to rest here, making it one of the largest existing burial grounds for African Americans who lived in New York City in the last two centuries.

A year after Green-Wood was founded in 1838, Louis Daguerre introduced the world to his revolutionary invention: photography. Join Jeff Richman, Green-Wood historian, on a tour of the pioneers of photography who are now permanent residents of the Cemetery. Green-Wood celebrates Pride Month with a special trolley tour illuminating permanent residents who have made a lasting impact on American history and culture. You will visit the graves of important LGBT figures including “It’s Raining Men” co-writer, Paul Jabara; sculptor of Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain, Emma Stebbins; activists and founders of the Hetrick Martin Institute, Drs. Emery Hetrick and Damien Martin, among others. This trolley tour is led by Andrew Dolkart and Ken Lustbader, Co-Directors of the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project.

In 2011, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today, there are over 4,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world.

In fact, since its founding in the nineteenth century as part of the Rural Cemetery Movement, before there was a Central Park, Green-Wood has been a place to engage with the natural world in an urban environment. Whether walking through the cherry tree allée, encountering the green monk parakeets that live in the Arch, or standing beneath a towering dawn redwood, you’ll learn about the environmental diversity that makes this Cemetery one of the city’s great natural resources.

Beekeeping for Bee-ginners, 5 Class Course
This 5 class course goes beyond the basics, and into the nitty gritty of beekeeping. You will finish this course prepared to embark on your own beekeeping adventure! This series of two-hour classes will teach you about bee behavior and biology, and best practices in: pest and disease management, feeding, beehive construction, beekeeper safety precautions, winterizing your hive, honey harvesting, and more! The course is taught by Green-Wood’s Head Beekeeper, Nick Hoefly of Astor Apiaries. All 5 classes must be attended for participation in this course, and students will receive a certificate of completion. The first 4 classes will take place in our Modern Chapel, and the final class will be a “live action” class with full equipment at the beehives. Spots are limited to 20 students, so don’t miss out!
