COVID-19 Update

Dear Friend of Green-Wood,

At Green-Wood we are dedicated to serving the needs of the families who have entrusted the care of their loved ones to us, as well the greater New York community. First and foremost on our minds is the health and safety of our neighbors and friends. During this uncertain time, nothing is more important than all of us doing what we can to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

Green-Wood has resumed in-person public programs, with strict safety protocols in place. Our robust slate of virtual programs will also continue. Check out our calendar of upcoming events for more information. In-person School Programs have also resumed. Cemetery operations and offices will continue to function as an essential service to the community. To lessen direct contact between individuals, we encourage you to contact us by email or phone.

To enable easier access for our neighbors, we have decided to open our Fort Hamilton Parkway and Prospect Park West Entrances—usually open to the public only on weekends—seven days a week. If you would like to support this initiative, please consider making a donation.

Our current hours, as of November 6, 2022, are the following:

  • Our Main Entrance (Fifth Avenue and 25th Street) will be open daily from 8am to 5pm to both pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Our Sunset Park Entrance (Fourth Avenue and 35th Street) will be open daily from 8am to 5pm (pedestrian gate) with vehicle admittance from 8am to 4pm.
  • Our Fort Hamilton Parkway Entrance (Fort Hamilton Parkway and Micieli Place) and Prospect Park West Entrance (Prospect Park West and 20th Street) will each be open from 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday (pedestrian gate only). On Saturday and Sunday, gates are open 8am to 5pm (pedestrian gate) with vehicle admittance from 8am to 4pm.

Please feel welcome to explore our landscape, but we ask that you abide by all rules and regulations for visitors on our grounds. Recreational activities, such as biking and jogging, are not permitted. If you have any questions, please view our full list here.

We remind you that Green-Wood is an active cemetery, please be respectful of ongoing cemetery services and operations. Please also maintain social distancing at all times and be mindful of those around you. We are counting on you to conduct yourselves appropriately while on our grounds so that we may continue to stay open as a resource to our community.

We are closely following the safety and preventative protocols offered by the CDC and local public health officials and have taken a series of proactive measures, including implementing enhanced cleaning procedures, to maintain a safe environment for our visitors. You may see our workers wearing PPE, this is a precaution intended to keep everyone safe.

We want to extend special thank you to all our essential workers who keep the Cemetery going. Their service allows us to carry out our founding purpose for families in need during this critical time, and for that we are ever grateful!

We recognize the role Green-Wood plays in so many lives, not just as a place of remembrance, but one of solace in an ever-uncertain world. Therefore we are dedicated to stay open and accessible during this time so you may continue to find peace in our landscape—as generations before us have.

In the words of our very first historian, Nehemiah Cleaveland, “to the weary and worn citizen, Green-Wood may well seem the very ideal of solitude─ a charming picture of repose . . . farther and farther away from strife” (1847).

We hope that Green-Wood may provide a respite for you and your family during these challenging times.

Stay safe and healthy.
