We are enormously proud and excited to present an evening of folk, blues, and rock music with the powerhouse duo of singer-guitarists Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams. Three time Grammy Award-winning Larry Campbell – best known for his eight years with Bob Dylan – has played with Elvis Costello, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, and Levon Helm’s Midnight Rambles, to name just a few. And Teresa, who met Larry when she was playing at the Bottom Line in the ‘80s, has sung with giants like Mavis Staples and Emmylou Harris. That’s why this performance by “the first couple of Americana” (Mojo Magazine) at Green-Wood, a National Historic Landmark, is a perfect marriage.

As a form of commemoration, these portraits of recently deceased loved ones were prized for the precious bond they created between the land of the living and the realm of the dead. This walking tour explores the stone and bronze images commissioned to immortalize the dearly departed, many of which were created by leading artists of the day, including sculptors Daniel Chester French, John Quincy Ward, and Charles Calverley, among others. Allison Meier, a staff writer for Hyperallergic, who specializes in the visual culture of overlooked history, will unravel how the Victorian age’s obsession with images of the dead was also found in painted portraits and postmortem daguerreotypes.

Battle of Brooklyn: Commemoration

Cubans at Green-Wood
Since it opened in 1838, Green-Wood has been the resting place of myriad immigrant communities who made a new homes for themselves and their families in New York City. To honor this rich legacy, join Professor Lisandro Perez and Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman for a special trolley tour exploring famed Cuban immigrants of the 19th century who count among the cemetery’s permanent residents. You will explore the mausoleum of sugar planter and refiner Miguel de Aldama, who sought to overthrow Spanish control of Cuba, and that of the Acea family, one of the wealthiest coffee-planting families on the island. Along the tour, your guides will share stories of politics, commercial enterprise, and tragedy relating to Cubans interred here.

There is no better way to enjoy the impressive array of fall foliage than by exploring New York City’s best kept greenspace. Beginning at the Fort Hamilton Gate House, artist Matthew Jensen will guide visitors on three-hour walks to discover Green-Wood’s rich collection of majestic trees and historic monuments. Jensen will be accompanied on each walk by a member of Green-Wood’s staff who will share their own behind-the-scenes experience and knowledge of the cemetery. No walk will be the same; come once, twice or three times for unexpected encounters!

Bedside singing choirs now exist throughout the United States, offering solace to those who are on the threshold of life. Artist Leigh Davis has created a new site specific sound installation for Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel that brings this beautiful music into its sacred space. Visitors are encouraged to sit or move through the chapel at their own leisure. The work offers a way to explore the power of loss and memory through song, emphasizing the beauty and peace one might find in the universal experience of death. Vigil is presented as part of Reimagining Tradition, an exhibition developed by Open Source Gallery.

Artist Walk: Discovering Trees and Stones
There is no better way to enjoy the impressive array of fall foliage than by exploring New York City’s best kept greenspace. Beginning at the Fort Hamilton Gate House, artist Matthew Jensen will guide visitors on three-hour walks to discover Green-Wood’s rich collection of majestic trees and historic monuments. Jensen will be accompanied on each walk by a member of Green-Wood’s staff who will share their own behind-the-scenes experience and knowledge of the cemetery. No walk will be the same; come once, twice or three times for unexpected encounters!

Birding in Peace
Before our gates open to the general public, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. By September, all our nesting birds’ offspring will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. Large numbers of blackbirds, flycatchers, sparrows, vireos, and swallows will also be passing through. By October, waterfowl are returning, and we’ll look for raptors heading south. November will bring back our overwintering denizen from the north.

A year after Green-Wood was founded in 1838, Louis Daguerre introduced the world to his latest invention, photography. Join Jeff Richman, Green-Wood's historian, on a first-ever tour of the pioneers of photography who are now permanent residents of the cemetery.
