It’s a NYC favorite, now in its twenty-first year! Bring a blanket and enjoy this free early summer performance. The concert features The New York City Symphonic Band at Third Street, led by music director Paul Corn and hosted by guest conductor Brian P. Worsdale. Each year we feature the musical works of Green-Wood’s permanent residents Fred Ebb, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Leonard Bernstein, and others. Local vendors will be on site selling food and drink throughout the afternoon. |

Suit up in protective gear (we’ll provide) and join our Head Beekeeper, Nick Hoefly, in opening and examining beehives. You’ll “tour” the various components of these beehives and hear the story of how our bees are cared for and how they live. Spots are limited to 20 attendees, so don’t miss out! This class is an introduction to the world of beekeeping. This two-hour class will touch on the basics of bee care and beehive maintenance. If weather permits, at the end of class, you’ll suit up in protective gear (we’ll provide) and join our Head Beekeeper, Nick Hoefly, to visit the beehives onsite. Spots are limited to 20 students, so don’t miss out!

The Green-Wood Cemetery is famous for its elaborate private burial lots and architecturally significant monuments. However, its lesser expensive public lots comprise about half of all burials at the cemetery. Green-Wood’s Manager of Preservation and Restoration, Neela Wickremesinghe, and Director of Programs and Special Projects, Harry Weil, lead a guided exploration of these sites. The tour will highlight the "Colored Lots", seven burial lots on the cemetery’s southern border, including one for The Colored Orphans Asylum. Over 1,300 are laid to rest here, making it one of the largest existing burial grounds for African Americans who lived in New York City in the last two centuries. |

A year after Green-Wood was founded in 1838, Louis Daguerre introduced the world to his revolutionary invention: photography. Join Jeff Richman, Green-Wood historian, on a tour of the pioneers of photography who are now permanent residents of the Cemetery. You will discover a fascinating world of innovators and artists, including Francois Gouraud, the agent Daguerre sent to America to introduce his creation that would change the world; Napoleon Sarony, the "photographer to the stars;" Samuel Morse, who not only invented the telegraph but also conducted America's earliest experiments in photography, and others. Green-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. Green-Wood celebrates Pride Month with a special trolley tour illuminating permanent residents who have made a lasting impact on American history and culture. You will visit the graves of important LGBT figures including “It’s Raining Men” co-writer, Paul Jabara; sculptor of Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain, Emma Stebbins; activists and founders of the Hetrick Martin Institute, Drs. Emery Hetrick and Damien Martin, among others. This trolley tour is led by Andrew Dolkart and Ken Lustbader, Co-Directors of the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project. |

The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café), an informal gathering to discuss philosophical, political or scientific ideas. In 2011, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today, there are over 4,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world.

Between the apocalyptic mutations of our times, the emergence of what philosopher Graham Harman calls weird materialism, and the growing popularity of psychedelia, esoterica, and other uncanny cultures, the weird has become a key zone of contemporary thought and experience.
