Henry Purcell wrote Dido & Aeneas in 1680, but this tragic meditation on destiny, love, and death resonates just as powerfully today. Director Alek Shrader interweaves excerpts from Christopher Marlowe’s play based on the same story, infusing a sense of agency and dignity back to the character of the wounded queen, and the terrible decision she faces when abandoned by the love of her life. Dead Distillers Trolley Tour
Green-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties.

Beekeeping 101
This class is an introduction to the world of beekeeping. This two-hour class will touch on the basics of bee care and beehive maintenance. If weather permits, at the end of class, you’ll suit up in protective gear (we’ll provide) and join our Head Beekeeper, Nick Hoefly, to visit the beehives onsite. Spots are limited to 20 students, so don’t miss out!

Death Café
Green-Wood Cemetery 500 25th Street, Brooklyn, NY, United StatesThe Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café), an informal gathering to discuss philosophical, political or scientific ideas. In 2011, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today, there are over 4,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world.

Welcome to the Weird: Illustrated Lecture and Book Signing with Erik Davis
As the world’s weather jumps the rails, some have started referring to global warming as global weirding—and for good reason. Between the apocalyptic mutations of our times, the emergence of what philosopher Graham Harman calls weird materialism, and the growing popularity of psychedelia, esoterica, and other uncanny cultures, the weird has become a key zone of contemporary thought and experience. In this talk, Dr. Erik Davis—author of the new book High Weirdness: Drugs, Esoterica, and Visionary Experience in the Seventies—will deepen our historical, conceptual, and aesthetic sense of what it means to live in weird times.

The Moth Mainstage is a specially curated evening featuring storytellers who develop and shape their stories with the show’s directors. Beyond traditional theater or standup comedy, Mainstages are a community event where entertainment and enlightenment merge. Because each story is true and every voice authentic, each show is a unique and intimate experience for the audience. Launched in 1997, The Moth showcases inspiring and professional storytellers at hundreds of shows, workshops, and special events throughout the United States.

Beekeeping for Bee-ginners, 5 Class Course
This 5 class course goes beyond the basics, and into the nitty gritty of beekeeping. You will finish this course prepared to embark on your own beekeeping adventure! This series of two-hour classes will teach you about bee behavior and biology, and best practices in: pest and disease management, feeding, beehive construction, beekeeper safety precautions, winterizing your hive, honey harvesting, and more! The course is taught by Green-Wood’s Head Beekeeper, Nick Hoefly of Astor Apiaries. All 5 classes must be attended for participation in this course, and students will receive a certificate of completion. The first 4 classes will take place in our Modern Chapel, and the final class will be a “live action” class with full equipment at the beehives. Spots are limited to 20 students, so don’t miss out!

Epilogues and Epitaphs
Most people wouldn’t equate “historically-informed Baroque chamber music” with “soul-blasting, face-melting hot sauce fire”... at least not until they hear Augusta McKay Lodge. She and her band Voyage Sonique bring a gas torch to the works of a bygone era, burning a path through a series of musical monuments to grief and remembrance.
