    Join us for a walk to the monument of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The bucolic cemetery is an oasis in urban Brooklyn, and Basquiat’s gravesite is a popular place for fans and artists to commemorate his life and give their thanks for his short but brilliant career. A tour to the site will be led by arts journalist and tour guide Allison Meier.

    Mark the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn with a truly revolutionary night. As you sip a drink and stroll the twilight landscape, Revolutionary War soldiers will illustrate life in the midst of a battle - setting up camp among Green-Wood’s hills, cooking, socializing, and steeling themselves for the next day's battle. Of course, the battles we modern New Yorkers face are not with the British, but often ourselves. By the light of the fire, Susan Kent of TELL IT: BROOKLYN will host an outdoor storytelling program that takes on battles of the body, spirit, and mind. Seasoned storytellers will take the stage, but attendees so inclined to tell their own battle story can throw their hat in the ring, too. The songwriting duo Charming Disaster will provide musical interludes.

    Calling all amateur arborists and horticultural hopefuls! Join Board Certified Master Arborist Kevin Wyatt and Green-Wood’s Curator of Plant Collections Joe Charap for this hands-on demonstration on how to effectively prune your trees and shrubs. A thoughtful and well executed pruning will keep your plants looking great and growing strong. You’ll practice using hand pruners, loppers, and pole pruners and learn the proper techniques behind sanitary, reduction, and developmental pruning. Participants will be working in Green-Wood on small trees and shrubs. Tools and protective equipment will be provided.

    Armed with a flashlight and the full moon’s brilliance, fearless trekkers will explore intriguing tombstones and the haunting catacombs with historian Jeff Richman. Accompanied by the ethereal and atmospheric sounds of live accordion music, the tour will keep an eye out for the spirits of illustrious cemetery residents like Boss Tweed, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Leonard Bernstein and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Peek inside massive stone walls and elaborate iron gates as you step inside stunning examples of Green-Wood’s distinct architecture. At each stop, docents will offer a glimpse into the lives of the personalities who now rest in these opulent structures. Bring your sneakers and walk the route; a handy map is provided at the main entrance.

    Green-Wood boasts a spectacular collection of 19th-century architectural wonders by some of the most famed architects in American history. Designing works to immortalize their patrons, many –including James Renwick, Jacob Wrey Mould, and Gamaliel King, among others – have also established their own permanent residences here. Part historical investigation, part homage, this tour highlights the critical role architects have played in transforming the landscapes of not only Green-Wood, but New York City.

You will visit the graves of fascinating figures in New York and American culture while your tour guide regales you with some mysterious tales. The night ends at our famous catacombs, which are normally closed to the public.
