This summer, unite the past and the future at Green-Wood! The Green-Wood Inventors Club combines the great outdoors, history, and modern technology to create fun workshops for families. Learn about famous scientists, designers, and inventors by exploring their life and work. Hands on projects will connect these fascinating personalities to our modern times. On the dates below, the Inventors Club will be stationed in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel, and at the Green-Wood monument of the personality we’re exploring. Visit both locations to learn about history and create something cool, too. Workshops are free and run from noon to 3:00 p.m.
Green-Wood Inventors Club is presented with Sunset Spark, an organization offering free, high-quality classes for the immigrant community of Sunset Park. Sunset Spark involves kids, adults and families in a wide variety of science and engineering subjects like neuroscience, software engineering, and physical computing.
July 19th: Charles Lewis and Louis Comfort Tiffany
The Tiffany family was artistic, innovative, and had an immense influence on 19th-century jewelry and design. The Inventors Club will examine the patents the family held, and explore how they forever influenced jewelry in America. Then, you’ll explore how the jewelry world is changing today through the use of 3D printing technology. See how the technology works, and then mimic the Tiffany’s by printing your own jewelry designs!
August 16th: Elias Howe
Learn about Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine! You’ll learn about Howe and his rival, Isaac Singer, by exploring historic newspaper clippings and ads. Then a hands-on workshop will teach you how to bring sewing into the 21st century, with soft circuitry technology that creates light-up clothing. You’ll even get a chance to reprogram the circuitry to light up in different ways!
Sept 13th: Frederick August Otto Schwarz
Learn about how FAO Schwarz went from being a new immigrant in America to owning one of the most famous toy stores in the country! Not only did FAO Schwarz own the most beloved toy store in New York, but his great-grandson is a pioneering civil rights advocate for city dwellers. Learn about the many ways this ambitious family shaped the city, through historic ads and newspapers. Once you’ve become acquainted with FAO Schwarz and his history, design your own electronic toys using motors, sensors, and your imagination!
Oct 11th: Isabella Goodwin
Learn about Isabella Goodwin, New York City’s first female detective! Goodwin was the first woman ever to use her sleuthing skills to bust bank robbers, extortionists and other turn of the century criminals. After learning about her pioneering detective work, visitors will build their own ultraviolet light wand. Use this wand to detect counterfeit bills, look for crime scenes, or focus more on your creative side by making light art with special photo paper.

El Club de Inventores examinara las patentes de la familia y explorara como influencio, para siempre, la fabricación de joyas en America. Después, exploraras como el mundo de las joyas esta cambiando hoy en día a través del uso de la tecnología de impresión 3D. Ve como la tecnología funciona, y después imita la de Tiffany imprimiendo tus propios diseños de joyas.

A través de anuncios y periódicos históricos aprenderás como esta familia ambiciosa formo de diferentes maneras la ciudad de Nueva York. Una vez que te hayas familiarizado con FAO Schwarz y su historia, diseñaras tus propios juguetes electrónicos usando motores, sensores y tu imaginación.

Lee y escucha acerca de cómo Goodwin utilizó sus habilidades de detective para atrapar ladrones de bancos, extorsionistas y otros criminales. Después de aprender acerca de su trabajo de detective, los visitantes podrán construir su propia varita luz ultravioleta. Utilice esta herramienta para detectar billetes falsos, busque la escena del crimen, o centrarse más en su lado creativo, haciendo arte de la luz con papel fotográfico especial.
