Striking Likenesses Trolley Tour
July 11th , 10:00am – 12:00pm

When The Green-Wood Cemetery opened in the early nineteenth century, posthumous portraiture was a powerful and popular art form, an intimate way to preserve the presence of the recently departed. These moving likenesses forged a tangible bond between the living and the dead, transforming grief into enduring beauty.
On this captivating walking tour, discover the remarkable sculpted and engraved portraits that immortalize some of Green-Wood’s permanent residents. Many were created by the era’s leading artists, including Daniel Chester French, John Quincy Ward, and Charles Calverley. Along the way, expert guide, Allison Meier, will reveal how the Victorian fascination with images of the dead extended beyond the cemetery gates—from painted memorial portraits to poignant postmortem daguerreotypes.
