Living Laboratory: Green-Wood’s 2025 Environmental Research Fellows

March 5th , 6:30pm 8:00pm

Over the past year, Green-Wood’s 2025 Environmental Research Fellows have been hard at work, using the Cemetery as their living laboratory to contribute to urban ecology. Join us for a special virtual presentation of their methodologies and findings.

In researching some of New York City’s least visible winged migrants, Nic Comparato spent nine months recording bat sonar using devices that detect ultrasonic frequencies inaudible to human ears. Learn what these recordings revealed about bat activity and species behavior, how different bat species use various types of urban green spaces in NYC, and how this research contributes to national conservation efforts.

Meanwhile, Dr. Emily Herstoff and Dr. Michael Tessler focused on chemistry across Green-Wood’s soils and in plant leaves. These findings set up Green-Wood as an ideal urban ecological study site. Learn how their findings will help guide Green-Wood (and other urban forests) grow healthy, resilient ecosystems into the future!

The presentation will be led by Sara Evans, Green-Wood’s director of living collections and curator.

These researchers were the recipients of Green-Wood’s Environmental Research Fellowship Award, which was officially launched in 2022. You can read more about their projects here.
