Green-Wood’s Green Adventure For Families
Presented in partnership with Genspace
April 27th , 10:00am – 1:00pm

Join us for a day of family-friendly nature adventures! Expert naturalists will be leading walks to collect data on birds, insects, fungi, and plants at the Cemetery for the City Nature Challenge.* Genspace, New York’s community bio lab, will bring the fun of science exploration through interactive performances. And so much more!

*What is the City Nature Challenge? Every year, for four days, people in cities across the world join together to find and identify as many species of wildlife as possible. To participate, all you need is a smartphone with a camera and an iNaturalist account, and we’ll help you photograph wildlife at Green-Wood.
Ongoing Activities (10am-1pm):
- Nature Drawing with Green-Wood and Gotham Taxidermy
- Microscopy, paper making, and mushroom ink drawing with Genspace
- New York Mycological Society Table
- All About Bees table with scientist Sara Kornbluth
- Butterfly vision flower art with Yadira Hadlett from Sunset Spark
Scheduled Activities:
- Flora and Fauna Walk (10am and 12pm): Join botanist Molly Rouzie and Chris Kreussling the Flatbush Gardener for a walk exploring relationships between plants and animals!
- Nature Bathing Basics (10:15am and 11:00am): Try out nature bathing, a mindfulness practice, with certified ANFT guide Rosemarie Miner, founder of ecology-first landscaping firm Our Temenos.
- Birds and Bugs Walk (10:15 and 11:45am): Join naturalist Matthew Wills on a hunt for birds and bugs at Green-Wood!
- Fungi Walk (11:15am): New York Mycological Society members Victoria Bayevski and Potter Palmer will lead families on a fun fungi hunt around the cemetery.
- Paseo por la naturaleza en español e ingles (10am and 11am): ¡Únase a los educadores de Green-Wood, Dhamar Romo-Chavez o Ari Riapos (Director de Proyectos de East New York Farms) en una caminata para explorar la naturaleza en el cementerio!
- Reading, Singing, and Book Signing with Rasha Hamid (11am and 12pm): Come listen to Brooklyn author, illustrator, and teacher Rasha Hamid read aloud her books Hello, Beech Tree! and How to Bird. Stay for a sing-along and a book signing!
- “Non-Native” Edible Plants Walk (in English and Mandarin) (11:30am): Join artist and researcher Huiyi Chen and learn to identify and forage for “non-native” edible plants. Explore their migration stories and their meanings in different cultures. This walk is a part of Chen’s Wild Herb Nomad project inspired by Sunset Park foragers.

Free. Registration is recommended, but not required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs for families throughout the year.
Before Reserving Your Spot, Please Note:
- Where to go: Please enter Green-Wood through the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street) and head to the Historic Chapel, the central location for the event.
- There is no check-in for this event. Registration just helps us know how many people to expect.
- A schedule of walks with expert naturalist guides will be announced closer to the event date.
- This program will proceed rain or shine. In case of extreme weather, the event may end early. Please wear weather appropriate shoes and clothes.
- If you want to contribute to the city Nature Challenge, we recommend you download the iNaturalist mobile app on your mobile device and create a profile (if you don’t already have one). All instructions and links to the mobile app can be found on iNaturalist. If you’re not sure how, volunteers will help you do so at the event.
