Inspired by the grand tradition of painting in the outdoors (or as the French say “en plein air”), the Guild of Adventure Painters hosts an afternoon of community creativity amidst the beauty of Green-Wood. Whether you are an expert or novice, a painter, sketcher, or master of crayons, everyone is welcome to explore their artistic impulses and talents amid the rolling hills and historic monuments of the Cemetery. Artists from the Guild will be on hand to offer advice, guidance, and conversation. This is not a class, but it is an opportunity to share your talents with others free of judgment or critique. Join for the whole afternoon, or pop in for an hour. All ages are welcome.

Price: Free. Registration recommended.

The Guild of Adventure Painters is an exploratory painting residency founded in 2018 by Johnny DeFeo and Aaron Zulpo. Each year Adventure Painting takes a group of invited studio artists on a journey to a beautiful location. The focus is on outdoor exploration, building connections with fellow artists and art institutions along the way. Adventure Painting is set up as a plein air painting adventure; residents are encouraged to make landscape paintings but can interact with the landscape however they see fit throughout the course of the residency. Adventure Painting provides artists an opportunity to travel and explore the American landscape with the hope that it helps advance each artist’s studio practice.

Free. Reservation is recommended so that we may gauge attendance. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. Your donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought-provoking programs at little or no cost to you.

Before Reserving Your Spot, Please Note:

  • In September, a map will be provided of possible locations to join the group! Stay tuned!
  • Attendees must bring their own art supplies and ways to get comfortable (chair, blanket, easel, etc).
  • A limited number of art supplies will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
  • Attendees are strongly encouraged to wear suitable footwear as access to the event involves walking up hills or stairs, as well as grassy and uneven terrain.
