SUMMARY:(Sold Out) 5 p.m. Book Launch Party for 'Guide to New York City Urban Landscapes'
DESCRIPTION: \nGuide to New York City Urban Landscapes\nby Robin Lynn and Francis Morrone\, with photographs by Edward A. Toran\nForeword by Pete Hamill\nPublished by W.W. Norton & Company \nThank you for your interest in this event\, but we have reached capacity and will not be registering any more attendees. Please check our calendar for other upcoming events that may interest you. \nSince the moment bustling New York was founded\, its residents have yearned for fresh\, green space and a temporary respite from urban life. Green-Wood is one such space and is proud to be featured in -– and on the cover of — this wonderful new book starring 38 stunning public places that shape the New York experience. \nDiscover newly created spaces along the water’s edge\, like Brooklyn Bridge Park; repurposed areas like The High Line and Concrete Plant Park in the Bronx; or the more traditional green spaces. As the oldest urban landscape in the book\, Green-Wood served as a direct inspiration for many of these sites\, including Central Park and Prospect Park. You’ll enjoy hors d’oeuvres and drinks at this opening soiree\, while the authors tell us how they selected these gorgeous outdoor spaces. \nCo-author Francis Morrone’s essays have appeared in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times; he was named by Travel + Leisure magazine as one of the best tour guides in the world. Pick up a copy or two and get your book signed! It’s a must-have for those who love urban New York but also cherish the ability to escape its daily strain. \nA Guide to Urban Landscape will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:1 p.m. Life and Death Along Sportsmen’s Row: Brooklyn’s Eighth Avenue and Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION: \n \nIn the 1890s\, a swath of Eighth Avenue was grandly deemed Sportsmen’s Row for the many residents in horseracing as owners\, trainers\, and jockeys. Meanwhile\, they lived among men of prominence and success in politics\, business\, law\, and the arts. Lucas Rubin has explored their intertwined lives in his 2012 book\, Brooklyn’s Sportsmen’s Row: Politics\, Society\, and the Sporting Life on Northern Eighth Avenue. And in fact\, much of Rubin’s research was done in Green-Wood’s fruitful archives. \nNow\, Rubin offers something of a final chapter\, a “where are they now?” of these early Brooklyn residents. Just as their lives came together in fascinating ways\, death brought many together again – right here in Green-Wood. \nThis talk will take a closer look at some of the book’s more peripheral characters – and some of Eighth Avenue’s most renowned denizens. After the talk\, hop on the trolley for a tour of related Green-Wood sites. \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free book talk/presentation in the historic Green-Wood chapel\, ending with a book signing.\nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. Tickets are $10 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and $15 for non-members.\n\n \nSeating is limited for both the talk and the trolley tour\, and reservations are recommended. \n(Inclement Weather Policy) \n\nThis event is presented in partnership with the Brooklyn Historical Society \nNot a Member?\nGet a free ticket with a membership at left and purchase additional Member Discount Tickets if desired. SUMMARY:1 p.m. Court’s in Session: America’s First Test of Religious Freedom
DESCRIPTION: \n \n \nGreen-Wood is the final resting place of Irish immigrant and lawyer William Sampson and Judge DeWitt Clinton – the two major players in an 1813 court case that was the first-ever test of religious freedom in America. In partnership with NYU’s Glucksman Ireland House and the New York Irish History Roundtable\, Green-Wood will honor this event and its major players on its 200th anniversary. \nAt the site of DeWitt Clinton and his stunning bronze statue\, you’ll see award-winning playwright and NYU graduate student Steve DiUbaldo’s dramatic interpretation of this landmark event – adapted from William Sampson’s published account of the case. Judge DeWitt Clinton will preside as the outdoor performance reveals Sampson’s artful argument for American freedom of religion. After the reading\, both Clinton and William Sampson will be honored as NYU’s Ireland House visits each grave for a wreath-laying ceremony. \n$15 for nonmembers. FREE for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund\, New York Irish History Roundtable\, Ireland House\, and for NYU students and faculty. Ireland House\, NY History Roundtable and NYU members\, call 718-210-3071 to reserve your free ticket. \nPerformance will also be shown Friday\, April 12th at NYU.
