DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Locally nesting birds will be incubating eggs or actively raising their first broods. \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nSunday\, May 7\, 14\, 21\, & 28 and Saturday\, May 6 & 20 at 6:00 AM\nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \nSummer Birding Sundays\nJune & July from 6-7:30am (except July 2nd)\,\nSundays August 6th & 20th from 6:30-8am\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring Cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. Greg Young\, co-host of the award-winning NYC history podcast\, The Bowery Boys\, emcees a night of storytelling\, where you and your fellow audience members will vote on the most tragic of Victorian tales.  \nHe will be joined by a team of seasoned storytellers who will try to convince you that their own heartbreaking tale of a Green-Wood permanent resident is worthy of the title. Will it be the victims of a shipwreck just 300 yards from port or the beautiful Charlotte Canda thrown from her horse-drawn carriage on the night of her 17th birthday? In this class\, Sean Sime\, who has over 20 years of professional experience in journalism\, fashion\, and documentary photography\, will share tips\, techniques\, and tools for capturing the splendor of nature.  \nYou will learn the best practices for lighting and composition\, as well as discovering how to fine tune exposure and focus. DESCRIPTION: \n \n \nThe Death Café is a simple concept. It was inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café) where people gathered informally to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought the concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 1\,500 death cafes in 26 countries around the world. \n \nBeginning in January 2017\, Green-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \nBirds of Late-Winter & Early Migrants\nSunday\, March 12 & 26 at 7:00 AM\nWith the beginning of longer days\, we’ll track many of the nearly 40 overwintering bird species at Green-Wood. Visitors are invited to transcribe their most intimate secrets onto paper and lay them to rest in a grave designed by the artist. The installation will debut on April 29th & 30th from 12:00 – 5:00 PM\, and Calle will be present to privately receive some visitors’ secrets. \nDuring the debut weekend\, visitors are encouraged to spend the day exploring the sculptures and monuments throughout Green-Wood\, a tradition that dates back to the early 1800s. Free maps of the cemetery\, specially made to accompany Calle’s installation\, will be available. Also guided walking tours\, with an emphasis on symbols and iconography\, will be offered at no cost. Following the inaugural performance weekend\, visitors can see Calle’s installation during regular cemetery hours and independently deposit secrets into the gravestone. \nCalle has pledged to return periodically over the next 25 years to exhume and cremate the written confessions in a ceremonial bonfire service and moment of remembrance. \nDuring the debut\, for best access to the installation\, visitors should come through Green-Wood’s main gates at 5th Avenue and 25th Street\, where a welcome table will be staged by the gothic archway. We will be distributing maps and directing people to the site from there. This is a free event\, open to the public\, and no RSVP is required.

It was inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café) where people gathered informally to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought the concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 1\,500 death cafes in 26 countries around the world. \n \nBeginning in January 2017\, Green-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel.
