DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Funds raised through this event will advance these exciting projects. \nAs one of New York City’s most beloved new cultural destinations\, Green-Wood presents a unique trifecta of art\, history and nature. Over a quarter million visitors come each year to stroll Green-Wood’s magnificent 478 acres and experience the abiding tranquility of this historic space. \n  \nOnline ticket sales for this event have ended. Indelibly imprinted with the energy and musicality of their legendary father\, and the theatricality and activism of their mother\, Felicia Cohn Monteleagre\, the three siblings carry the Bernstein spirit and legacy into the twenty-first century. DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Brooklyn\, fought in 1776 on land that is now a part of Green-Wood\, was the first battle of the American Revolution to be waged after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Green-Wood hosts a day of commemoration to honor all those who served to defend the young republic. See parades\, cannon fire\, horses\, and re-enactments. This is a great event for kids and families! \n(SOLD OUT) 10 – 11 a.m. – TROLLEY TOUR: Join author and historian Barnet Schecter and Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman for a tour of Green-Wood’s Revolutionary War-related sites. Historic re-enactors will demonstrate revolutionary weapons and tactics. \n12:30 p.m. – BATTLE OF BROOKLYN PARADE: Grab a Revolutionary regiment flag\, wave it high\, and march to Battle Hill with The Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. For The Angel’s Share\, the Naughtons will play a program bookended by Leonard Bernstein\, in celebration of his 100th birthday year (and because his final resting place is but a stone’s throw from the Catacombs). Join our expert tour guides to hear fascinating stories of Green-Wood’s permanent residents\, see breathtaking views of Manhattan\, tread where George Washington and his troops fought the Battle of Brooklyn\, and much more (scroll down for schedule of different themed tours available). \n$15 for members of Green-Wood. / $20 for non-members. Seating is limited. Trolley tours routinely sell out. We strongly suggest that you reserve tickets in advance to ensure a spot for your preferred day! \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. In order to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility aids on the trolley\, arrangements must be made in advance. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1. Please note that portions of the tour take place outside the trolley\, however attendees may stay seated in the trolley if they wish. SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended.
