DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. The centerpiece of Border Crossings is an altar designed for the community by artist Adrian Viajero Roman\, a long time Sunset Park resident. His inspiration is the El Dia de Los Muertos altars created to honor the dead throughout Mexico and the Mexican diaspora. With many free events\, Border Crossings is a weekend of celebration\, reflection\, and commemoration. \nCo-presented by Bard Graduate Center and The Green-Wood Cemetery\, Border Crossings is part of a series of public programs designed to complement our current exhibition Agents of Faith: Votive Objects in Time and Place. We welcome participants of all backgrounds and religious beliefs. \nAbout the Altar \nAdrian Viajero Roman’s altar commemorates loved ones who have crossed the border from life to death. In particular\, his Puerto Rican compatriots who died during Hurricane Maria in 2017 and those who lost their lives while crossing a border between Mexico and the United States. \nAdd something of your own and be a part of this work of art. All visitors are invited to bring personal offerings to the altar. Flowers\, photographs\, notes\, and/or other objects are welcome. After the screening\, Harry Weil\, Green-Wood’s Manager of Programs\, will join Davis in a discussion about her research and work. \nFive years ago\, artist Leigh Davis had a strange and profound experience at the deathbed of a family member. Since then\, she has worked to create a body of work examining unusual phenomena reported to happen around the time of a death. They include premonitions\, seeing a golden light\, chills or an unexplained warmth\, and sudden lucidity. DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. But far from the grunting Hollywood brutishness of Boris Karloff\, the original told the heartbreaking story of a living\, feeling creature\, brought into the world only to be forsaken by his creator and left to fend for himself in a hostile world. Drawing the parallels to modern society\, pianist/composer Gregg Kallor will offer the World Premiere of a new suite of operatic sketches based on the monster’s harrowing tale\, in a partnership with On Site Opera. The program will also feature his other acclaimed vocal works\, and the premiere of a solo piano piece in tribute to Leonard Bernstein. \nThe Program: Kallor: Sketches from Frankenstein Suite (World Premiere)\, and other works \nMusic by Gregg Kallor \nDirected by Sarah Meyers\nLighting by Tláloc López-Watermann\nCostumes by Fay Eva \nThe Singers:\nJennifer Johnson Cano\, mezzo-soprano\nJoshua Jeremiah\, baritone\nBrian Cheney\, tenor \nThe Orchestra:\nGregg Kallor\, piano\nJoshua Roman\, cello \nThe Angel’s Share\, a new series of opera and chamber music concerts\, takes place in Green-Wood’s Catacombs. One of the oldest structures in the 478-acre National Historic Landmark Cemetery\, the Catacombs were built in the 1850s and are normally closed to the public.
