Wednesday, September 16th, 6:00pm7:00pm

Event Navigation

henry ward beecherHe was arguably one of the famous men in America (and Brooklyn) in the nineteenth century: Henry Ward Beecher. An internationally acclaimed preacher who helped redefine American Christianity, Beecher was an outspoken advocate for abolition, temperance, and women’s suffrage, among other causes. His Plymouth Congregational Church in Brooklyn Heights was a vital “station” on the Underground Railroad. Join author and historian Debby Applegate and Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman to learn about this fascinating—albeit sometimes scandalous—man and the Brooklyn that he called home. Applegate was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Biography for her critically acclaimed book: The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher.
