In August 1776\, American troops established a defensive position on this site\, in the hills separating Flatbush from the rest of Brooklyn\, to hold off the British. However\, on August 27\, British troops evaded these defenses\, forcing the Americans to withdraw across the Gowanus Creek to temporary safety. SUMMARY:Black Loyalist Virtual Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Prospect Park Alliance for a virtual tour of the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre in Shelburne\, Nova Scotia at Lefferts Historic House. Many Black Brooklynites worked for the British army during the American Revolution. Some gained freedom from enslavement by doing so. When the Americans won the war\, these Black Loyalists feared the new nation would not respect their rights. So they evacuated to Nova Scotia in 1783. The Black Loyalist Heritage Centre interprets\, safeguards\, and promotes the history and heritage of the Black Loyalists. They will share these lab findings in a presentation open to the public at the end of their fellowship. \n\n\n\nNo prior knowledge of soil science or fungi is necessary. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to get your hands dirty. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect: The programming and education will be geared primarily toward an adult audience\, but kids are very welcome. DESCRIPTION:Join Old Stone House’s Director of Education\, Margaret Weber\, for a session of Handwriting the Constitution. \n\n\n\nHandwriting the Constitution is a social art project begun in 2017 by artist Morgan O’Hara. It invites people from all walks of life to meet in public spaces to handwrite the US Constitution or other documents written to protect human rights and freedoms. To date approximately 2000 people have participated\, both nationally and internationally. \n\n\n\nThe goal of this art practice is to encourage people to hold their own Handwriting sessions on a recurring basis; to create a physical and psychological space that explores the practice of concentrated writing as an art form\, and a process designed to bring people together in a quiet and calming way\, all by focusing on human rights. It has been identified as a powerful and transformative form of activism for introverts. \n\n\n\nParticipants are welcome to work on their own journey through the U.S. Constitution\, but are welcome to explore other documents of freedom such as the U.N.
