SUMMARY:Explore Green-Wood’s Fungal Biodiversity: Chestnut Hill
DESCRIPTION:Rain Date: Sunday\, May 10th\, from 2–4 pm. \n\n\n\nCome learn about fungi at Green-Wood! Join MYCOmmunity Mapping Project on a community science dig to learn about the fungal lives beneath our feet. We will take soil samples under Green-Wood’s American chestnut trees to test for fungal DNA and contribute to a greater understanding of urban biodiversity. \n\n\n\nThis session will start with a brief introduction to local soil and mycorrhizal fungi\, why they matter\, and why we want to get to know them. We will also briefly cover the history of the American chestnut tree at Green-Wood. Once abundant throughout eastern North America\, this native species was devastated by a fungal blight and is now the focus of widespread restoration efforts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThen participants will dig in—literally—by taking soil samples together from a few different spots near and around the chestnut trees. After the dig\, Green-Wood Environmental Research Fellows Whitney Bauck and Lauren Wilson will sequence the fungal DNA in the samples with lab partners and report our findings back to the group. \n\n\n\nNo prior knowledge of soil science or fungi is necessary. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to get your hands dirty. \n\n\n\nAbout the facilitators: Whitney Bauck and Lauren Wilson are Green-Wood Environmental Research Fellows and founders of MYCOmmunity Mapping Project\, who started out as friends\, neighbors\, and dirt and fungi lovers living in Brooklyn. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect: The programming and education will be geared primarily toward an adult audience\, but kids are very welcome. Be prepared for at least 20 minutes of walking with some steep hills within the Cemetery. \n\n\n\nPlease note that if only 1 ticket shows as available during the purchase process\, that is the last ticket available.  \n\n\n\nBEFORE RESERVING YOUR SPOT\, PLEASE NOTE:\n\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in takes place at the Gothic Arch near the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street). \n\n\n\nAccessibility & Safety: Walking tour routes cover hilly\, grassy\, and uneven terrain.
