DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily.  \n\n\n\nNo matter when you stop by\, you’ll always see a variety of species passing through. By September\, offspring of summer’s nesting birds will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. SUMMARY:Honoring World War I Hero Grace Banker
DESCRIPTION:While the contributions of women in World War I are often overlooked\, they played pivotal roles on the front lines of communication. Join us to honor one of these remarkable women—Grace Banker (1892-1960)\, chief operator of the United States Army Signal Corps during the war. Grace commanded the “Hello Girls\,” a group of bilingual women who decoded messages\, operated switchboards\, and translated vital communications for the American and French forces in battle. Stationed within artillery range\, they were indispensable to the success of the Allied war effort. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. No registration required.  \n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will walk to Grace’s grave\, accompanied by musicians and an Armed Forces color guard\, where brief remarks will be made by Green-Wood officials\, veterans\, and Grace’s granddaughter\, who has fought for years to secure recognition for Grace and the “Hello Girls.” A bronze plaque and Army Veteran medallion will be unveiled in honor of Grace’s service.  \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. This year’s altar\, created by Raul Ayala\, pays homage to the traditions of the Ecuadorian Andes\, where November 2nd is celebrated as Día de los Difuntos (Day of the Deceased or All Soul’s Day).  \n\n\n\nKaranakuy is a Kichwa word that embodies the concept of giving as an act of reciprocity. The altar weaves together elements that invite visitors to engage through their senses\, utilizing plants\, fruits\, and culinary traditions from the Andes. Traditions associated with Día de los Difuntos includes two distinctive culinary items: guaguas de pan\, sweet bread figures shaped and decorated like babies\, and colada morada (or its fermented version\, yana api)\, a thick beverage that is made with fruit and spices and used in rituals and celebrations tied to the agricultural calendar. \n\n\n\nInspired by guaguas de pan\, visitors are encouraged to craft their own offerings for the altar by shaping fondant into doll-like figures or objects commemorating their departed loved ones. They may also leave personal items\, such as mementos\, photos\, or flowers\, upon the altar. The large urn at the center of the Chapel will be filled with yana api as an offering to those who have passed. \n\n\n\nRaul Ayala is a visual artist and educator focused on mural production\, drawing\, and public art. His work attempts to question normative historical parameters and coloniality through a juxtaposition of a broad spectrum of primary sources\, usually aiming for a collaborative and co-creative process. He was the recipient of the 2014 New York Foundation of the Arts’ Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program Award\, the 2015 Create Change Commissions Artist Award of The Laundromat Project\, and the 2016 Rauschenberg Artist as Activist Residency\, among others. The large urn at the center of the Chapel will be filled with yana api as an offering to those who have passed. \n\n\n\nRaul Ayala is a visual artist and educator focused on mural production\, drawing\, and public art. His work attempts to question normative historical parameters and coloniality through a juxtaposition of a broad spectrum of primary sources\, usually aiming for a collaborative and co-creative process. El altar de este año\, creado por Raúl Ayala\, rinde homenaje a las tradiciones de los Andes ecuatorianos donde se celebra el 2 de noviembre como el Día de los Difuntos. \n\n\n\nKaranakuy es una palabra Kichwa que encarna el concepto de dar como acto de reciprocidad. El altar entrelaza elementos que invitan a los visitantes a participar a través de sus sentidos\, utilizando plantas\, frutas y tradiciones culinarias de los Andes. Las tradiciones asociadas con el Día de los Difuntos incluyen dos elementos culinarios distintivos: guaguas de pan\, figuras de pan dulce con forma y decoración de bebés\, y colada morada (o su versión fermentada\, yana api)\, una bebida espesa hecha con frutas y especias y que se utiliza en rituales y celebraciones vinculadas al calendario agrícola. \n\n\n\nSe anima a los visitantes a elaborar sus propias ofrendas para el altar utilizando fondant en forma de muñecos inspirados por las guaguas de pan.
