SUMMARY:Mother
DESCRIPTION:AN Installation by Eiko Otake\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Maria Baranova\n\n\n\nFebruary 25th–May 7thFree and Open to the Public Daily 10am–5pmHistoric Chapel \n\n\n\nIn her fifty-year career\, Eiko Otake has explored themes of loss\, which has included practicing her own death\, conversing with the dead\, and moving among the abandoned remains of irradiated Fukushima. Otake is interested in communing with and surveying the physical and emotional traces of the deceased. \n\n\n\nIn Mother\, through videos and sculpture\, Otake talks to and dances with her mother\, who died in 2019. It is one daughter and her mother’s personal story. The artist\, however\, hopes viewers have an opportunity to contemplate their own maternal bonds\, as well as the diverse yet common connection to a mother that “links us all to the distant past.” Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel is a poignant setting for Mother\, as for over a century it has provided many with a place for such reflection.  \n\n\n\nMother is curated by Harry Weil\, Green-Wood’s Vice President of Education and Public Programs. Iris McCloughan aided in the installation’s creation as a dramaturg. Mother includes two videos created in 2019 soon after Otake’s mother passed away\, as well as photo prints and objects. The video of the artist speaking is excerpted from “Elegies\,” made in collaboration with John Killacky and Brian Stevenson. The other\, “With Mother in Twilight\,” was filmed by Rebekkah Palov.   \n\n\n\nMade possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nClick here for more information about the artist and installation. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Evan Rabeck\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April) \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Policy: In accordance with New York State and CDC guidance\, masks are optional. SUMMARY:Threading Stones: Soul Candles
DESCRIPTION:In Partnership with The Neighborhood\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor centuries\, Jewish women in Eastern Europe\, called feldmesterins\, measured cemeteries and graves with thread. They used the threads to make special neshome likht (soul candles) or\, in some cases\, protection bands worn around the wrists\, ankles\, or neck. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this workshop / walking tour\, led by Sarah Chandler and Annie Cohen of The Shamir Collective\, we will learn about these forgotten cemetery rituals\, and the traditional belief that the cemetery was a portal where we could access the help of our ancestors. We will visit some of the Jewish people buried at Green-Wood and use these rituals to connect with them and with our own ancestors. We will then use the threads to make soul candles. \n\n\n\nThis is an event for anyone who is interested in Jewish and/or local history\, who wants to discover some neglected folklore and protection magics\, or to find new paths of ancestral connection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in collaboration with The Neighborhood. \n\n\n\nCheck-in will take place by the Modern Chapel near the Main Entrance to Green-Wood on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street. \n\n\n\nThe Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life is a new model of cultural and community center designed to match the needs and spirit of the Jewish communities in Central and Northern Brooklyn. They partner with creative people and organizations throughout Brooklyn on pop-up programs. \n\n\n\nThe Shamir Collective is a small group of mystics\, artists\, and scholars who are working to renew the Jewish relationship with the earth through creative ritual\, mindfulness\, and transformative experiential learning.

SUMMARY:Spring Egg Hunt: Spotted Lanternfly Edition
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Sara Evans\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is not your familiar Eastertide activity. Join Sara Evans\, senior manager and curator of living collections\, on a hunt for spotted lanternfly egg masses on the trees in Green-Wood.  \n\n\n\nSince 2014\, the spotted lanternfly\, a planthopper native to Asia\, has been spreading and establishing throughout the eastern United States. Because they lack significant natural predators in the area\, their population is expanding unchecked. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nAs spotted lanternflies feed on trees and vines\, they add stress to the plants\, and can even kill several species\, including tree-of-heaven. Removing egg masses before they hatch is a surefire way to manage their population and reduce stress on our urban forest! \n\n\n\nJoin us to learn how to identify\, safely remove\, and effectively discard egg masses\, while learning about the life cycles and documenting the egg-laying habits of the spotted lanternfly. \n\n\n\nAnd remember that you can slow the spread of spotted lanternfly by checking that your vehicle and firewood is free of egg masses or nymphs before traveling with it out of state.  \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nBefore Reserving Your SPot\, Please Note:\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Policy: In accordance with New York State and CDC guidance\, masks are optional.
