SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Evan Rabeck\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April) \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\nPlease note that if only 1 ticket shows as available during the purchase process that is the last ticket available. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nAttendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in takes place at the meadow near the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street).\n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: We strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable footwear. The route includes several steep hills\, some stairs\, as well as grassy and uneven terrain. There is no place to sit down during the tour. Due to the challenging nature of the route\, this tour is not ADA compliant and is not recommended for children under the age of 10.\n\n\n\nA Little More About Safety: Unless it is a medical emergency\, it is not possible to leave during the tour. Please consider your own abilities–as well as those in your party–before purchasing tickets.\n\n\n\nRefunds and exchanges: Ticket sales are final. No exchanges or refunds unless the tour is canceled. If a rain date is scheduled\, tickets will be honored only on that date.\n\n\n\nInclement Weather Policy: We monitor the weather throughout the day for the best chance of proceeding with the tour\, and will not make a final decision until at least 3 hours before the start of the tour. Cancellations will be announced via Eventbrite email blasts\, so check your email and spam folders.\n\n\n\nFeeling Sick? DESCRIPTION:Credit: Kevin Condon\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Long Story\n\n\n\nBeethoven’s final String Quartet is an indescribably powerful\, transcendently life-affirming masterpiece. Its movements are centered around the towering slow section\, which Beethoven wrote after recovering from a terrible illness\, solemnly titling it a “Hymn of thanks to God from one who is healed.” In times of despair and division\, the beauty of this music remains a balm to the soul\, and a reminder of how we can find strength in our darkest moments. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $85 \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe fabulous foursome of the Ulysses Quartet\, who last joined us in the Catacombs to perform Schubert’s Death and the Maiden\, return once more\, bringing their glorious musicality to this singular work.  \n\n\n\nThe Short Story\n\n\n\nThe inscrutable beauty of this timeless work\, played by one of today’s top ensembles\, in the hallowed vaults of the Catacombs… we’ll see you there. \n\n\n\nThe Angel’s Share\n\n\n\nNow in its sixth season\, the Angel’s Share presents intimate classical classical music concerts\, with repertoire ranging from medieval through to contemporary works\, specifically chosen to highlight the unique presence and acoustic power of Green-Wood’s Catacombs\, and the singular character of the Cemetery grounds. The series is curated and directed by Death of Classical Founder Andrew Ousley\, in partnership with the Cemetery. Each Angel’s Share concert features a pre-show spirits tasting\, included in the ticket price\, and the series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel\, thus going to the angels. Concerts have been praised in major cultural press throughout the country\, with Vogue Magazine describing it as “one of the most riveting and unusual chamber music performances of my lifetime\,” and The New York Times saying “In a Cemetery\, music lives.” \n\n\n\nThe Performers\n\n\n\nUlysses Quartet Christina Bouey\, violinRhiannon Banerdt\, violinPeter Dudek\, violaGrace Ho\, cello \n\n\n\nThe Ulysses Quartet has been praised by The Strad for “the kind of chemistry many quartets long for\, but rarely achieve.” Founded in 2015\, the group won the grand prize and gold medal in the senior string division of the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and first prize in the 2018 Schoenfeld International String Competition. In 2017\, the quartet finished first in the American Prize and won the Vietnam International Music Competition in 2019.
Tickets are still available for Saturday\, June 29th. \n\n\n\nStone l is the first installment of a new interdisciplinary collaboration between internationally acclaimed performers\, Eiko Otake and Margaret Leng Tan.  \n\n\n\nIn June 2023\, Eiko visited the Gylsboda Quarry while in residency in Sweden. During her time there she felt the quarry to be a violent place\, stating “deep deep below I saw the machine-scarred surfaces of stones that I was not supposed to be seeing.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $30\, and $25 for members. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe resulting video\, projected onto the stone walls of the Historic Chapel\, provides the setting for a performance and contemplation on the immensity of time\, tension\, and density that stone holds. Eiko invited Margaret to reflect with her on humans’ incessant need for material resources\, a need invariably destructive to the environment. Departing from their traditional roles as dancer and pianist\, the collaborators sustain each other through sound and movement. \n\n\n\nThere will be five performances of Stone I\, occurring from 8:30-9:30pm on June 26th\, 27th\, 28th\, and 29th. \n\n\n\nEiko Otake is a movement-based interdisciplinary artist. Born and raised in Japan and a resident of New York since 1976\, her work centers on movement and visual poetry. For more than 40 years\, she performed as part of Eiko & Koma\, but since 2014 has focused on solo projects. Otake’s A Body in Places has been performed at over 70 sites\, including The Green-Wood Cemetery in September 2020. She received a special Duke Performing Award\, Bessie Award citation\, an Art Matters grant\, and the Anonymous Was a Woman Award. In 2023\, her installation “Mother” was on view for three months in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, and concluded with a performance activating the site and installation titled With Mother. \n\n\n\nMargaret Leng Tan\, famously known as the “queen of the toy piano\,” has been hailed by The New Yorker as “the diva of avant-garde pianism.” Her practice embraces theater\, choreography\, performance which has led to her acclaimed\, dramatic sonic portrait\, Dragon Ladies Don’t Weep. Tan is the subject of two feature documentaries and most recently\, a children’s storybook\, Becoming Margaret Leng Tan (Marshall Cavendish International\, Asia). She is a recipient of The National Endowment for the Arts’ Solo Recitalist Award and the Cultural Medallion\, Singapore’s highest artistic accolade. \n\n\n\nIris McCloughan is the dramaturg for Stone I. \n\n\n\nEiko’s month long residency in June 2023 was supported by MARC (Milvus Artistic Research Center in Knislinge\, Sweden) to create a new film/video work. Rachel Tess\, MARC’s Artistic Director\, fostered Eiko’s collaboration with cinematographer Thomas Zamolo. Parts of the footage filmed at the Gylsboda Quarry are the source of a new video Eiko is editing as a part of her new performance piece Stone.   \n\n\n\nThis program is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts. \n\n\n\nFor a discounted $20 ticket for students\, seniors\, or artists\, please email us at events@green-wood.com for a discount code. \n\n\n\nPlease note that if only 1 ticket shows as available during the purchase process that is the last ticket available. \n\n\n\nPlease read this important information:\n\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Contactless check-in ONLY takes place at the Gothic Arch near the Main Entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street\, Brooklyn\, NY 11232). He is recipient of the Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists and the 2022 Yvar Mikhashoff Prize\, and a Yamaha Artist. He is an internationally recognized interpreter of living\, modern\, and classical composers and a pioneer of DIY culture in concert music. You can learn more about Adam and his practice on his website.  \n\n\n\nHave a Listen! Tendler will be periodically uploading tracks that will be on loop in the installation\, you preview them here. \n\n\n\nMore details about Exit Strategy and the closing ceremony are forthcoming.  \n\n\n\nThe Fort Hamilton Gatehouse is located just inside Green-Wood’s Fort Hamilton Parkway Entrance (Fort Hamilton Parkway and Micieli Place.)
