SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Evan Rabeck\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April) \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June) \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August) \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\nPlease note that if only 1 ticket shows as available during the purchase process that is the last ticket available. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nAttendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in takes place at the meadow near the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street).\n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: We strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable footwear. The route includes several steep hills\, some stairs\, as well as grassy and uneven terrain. There is no place to sit down during the tour. Due to the challenging nature of the route\, this tour is not ADA compliant and is not recommended for children under the age of 10.\n\n\n\nA Little More About Safety: Unless it is a medical emergency\, it is not possible to leave during the tour. Please consider your own abilities–as well as those in your party–before purchasing tickets.\n\n\n\nRefunds and exchanges: Ticket sales are final. No exchanges or refunds unless the tour is canceled. If a rain date is scheduled\, tickets will be honored only on that date.\n\n\n\nInclement Weather Policy: We monitor the weather throughout the day for the best chance of proceeding with the tour\, and will not make a final decision until at least 3 hours before the start of the tour. Cancellations will be announced via Eventbrite email blasts\, so check your email and spam folders.\n\n\n\nFeeling Sick? SUMMARY:Angel’s Share: Spring\, Strings\, and Tasty Things
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Kevin Condon\n\n\n\n\n\nRain Date May 25\, 2024 \n\n\n\nThe Long Story\n\n\n\nAfter three years of alliterative magnificence\, beginning with the legendary Burgers\, Bourbon & Beethoven Festival\, we’ve decided that we should stop limiting ourselves to just one choice of food\, drink\, and musical repertoire. This year\, we open our hearts\, minds\, and gullets\, to take in a smorgasbord of sounds\, sips\, and sumptuous victuals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $65 \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening begins with a wondrous bit of wandering across Green-Wood’s historic landscape – the perfect backdrop to enjoy a variety of food (snacks included in ticket price\, with heartier fare available for purchase)\, spirit tastings\, and chamber music performances. Then\, the insanely talented members of Ruckus\, one of the finest Baroque bands playing today\, will offer a lesson in old-school social dancing\, to anyone who wishes to shake it like they did in 1799… THEN\, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better\, Ruckus will close the evening with a performance of Handel’s majestic “Water Music” suite. We’ll send you home with a happy heart\, a full belly\, and a spring in your step. \n\n\n\nThe Short Story\n\n\n\nSay hello to the warm season at Green-Wood\, with a night of Baroque Strings and Tasty Things… it’s one of our favorite events of the year\, so don’t miss it! \n\n\n\nThe Angel’s Share\n\n\n\nNow in its sixth season\, the Angel’s Share presents intimate classical classical music concerts\, with repertoire ranging from medieval through to contemporary works\, specifically chosen to highlight the unique presence and acoustic power of Green-Wood’s Catacombs\, and the singular character of the Cemetery grounds. The series is curated and directed by Death of Classical Founder Andrew Ousley\, in partnership with the Cemetery. Each Angel’s Share concert features a pre-show spirits tasting\, included in the ticket price\, and the series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel\, thus going to the angels. Concerts have been praised in major cultural press throughout the country\, with Vogue Magazine describing it as “one of the most riveting and unusual chamber music performances of my lifetime\,” and The New York Times saying “In a Cemetery\, music lives.” \n\n\n\nRuckus\n\n\n\nRuckus is a shapeshifting\, collaborative baroque band with a visceral and playful approach to early music. The ensemble debuted in Handel’s Aci\, Galatea e Polifemo in a production directed by Christopher Alden featuring Anthony Roth Costanzo\, Ambur Braid and Davóne Tines at National Sawdust. The band’s playing earned widespread critical acclaim: “achingly delicate one moment\, incisive and punchy the next” (New York Times); “superb” (Opera News). \n\n\n\nRuckus’s core is a continuo group\, the baroque equivalent of a jazz rhythm section: guitars\, keyboards\, cello\, bassoon and bass. The ensemble aims to fuse the early-music movement’s questing\, creative spirit with the grit\, groove and jangle of American roots music\, creating a unique sound of “rough-edged intensity” (New Yorker). Its members are assembled from among the most creative and virtuosic performers in North American early music\, and is based in New York City. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing Tickets\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nTasting is for attendees 21 years of age or older with proof of ID.\n\n\n\nDrinks and Food: Spirits tasting\, water\, and some light snacks are free. There will be food from a variety of vendors for sale. Picnics and outside food are not permitted.\n\n\n\nBe On Time: Check-in begins at 6:30pm. No early admittance. No admittance after 8:30pm.\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in ONLY takes place at the Main Entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street). There are no paper or e-tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nFor Your Comfort and Safety: This event will take place along hilly and uneven terrain. We strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable footwear.\n\n\n\nRefunds and exchanges: Ticket sales are final. No exchanges or refunds. In case of inclement weather\, tickets will ONLY be honored on the rain date Saturday\, May 25th.\n\n\n\nAttendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nFeeling Sick? Stay home if you are feeling sick or running a fever.

SUMMARY:Remembrance Garden: Artist Talk with Eugene Richards
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Eugene Richards\n\n\n\n\n\nIn March 2020\, photographer\, writer\, and filmmaker Eugene Richards sought solace in Green-Wood after battling a severe case of COVID-19. The book interweaves the names and dates inscribed on gravestones with Richards’ personal memories to create a poignant portrait of the Cemetery and its relationship with time and nature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Richards in the Historic Chapel for a conversation with NYC historian Seth Kamil. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Journalism Award\, and the Kraszna-Krausz Book Award for Photographic Innovation. \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required.
