SUMMARY:Mapping the Past: The Sanborn Maps
DESCRIPTION:In the nineteenth century\, fire was such a genuine concern for growing cities that insurers created finely detailed maps of buildings\, properties\, and streets for the fire insurance industry—for the purpose of assessing risk and cost of insurance. The Sanborn Map Company\, founded by Green-Wood permanent resident Daniel Sanborn (1827-1883) in 1867\, produced more than 700\,000 of these intricate fire insurance maps of the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, and Cuba over the nearly a century it was in operation. Today\, the significance of these maps reaches far beyond their original purpose\, providing critical information about the history of our cities.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $9\, and $4 for members. \n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual EventA Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Jeff Richman\, Green-Wood’s historian\, and Ian Fowler\, curator and geospatial librarian for the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division at The New York Public Library\, for a fascinating discussion of the legendary Sanborn maps and what they tell us. You will see how the neighborhoods around Green-Wood developed and learn how you can explore century-old maps of your own neighborhood online. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History.

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:U'ncuontru
DESCRIPTION:A film by Adrian Paci\n\n\n\n\n\nOn loop in the Historic Chapel April 1st–April 17th\, 10am–5pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdrian Paci’s U’ncuontru (2021) was inspired by the religious ritual of the ‘Madonna vasa vasa’\, which takes place every year on Easter Sunday in the Sicilian town of Modica and is attended by thousands of onlookers. After a long procession\, the statues of the risen Christ and of the Virgin Mary come together at midday where the traditional “vasata” (“kissing”) takes place\, a jubilant reuniting of mother and son.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree and open to the public \n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2021\, due to the pandemic\, the procession could not take place\, but Paci imagined a nocturnal and clandestine meeting taking place regardless of the restrictions. A meeting far from the daylight and lacking the enthusiastic participation of the crowd. A silent and intimate encounter between a mother and son—between a woman veiled in black who removes her cloak and embraces the risen Christ—despite the absence of applause\, revelry\, and music.  \n\n\n\nFrom April 1st through May 7th\, Paci’s solo exhibition\, The Wanderers\, will be on display at kaufmann repetto (55 Walker Street in Manhattan). The artist will be present for an opening reception on Friday\, April 1st\, 6–8pm.  \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April)\n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June)\n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August)\n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest.
