SUMMARY:Mother
DESCRIPTION:AN Installation by Eiko Otake\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Maria Baranova\n\n\n\nFebruary 25th–May 7thFree and Open to the Public Daily 10am–5pmHistoric Chapel \n\n\n\nIn her fifty-year career\, Eiko Otake has explored themes of loss\, which has included practicing her own death\, conversing with the dead\, and moving among the abandoned remains of irradiated Fukushima. Otake is interested in communing with and surveying the physical and emotional traces of the deceased. \n\n\n\nIn Mother\, through videos and sculpture\, Otake talks to and dances with her mother\, who died in 2019. It is one daughter and her mother’s personal story. The artist\, however\, hopes viewers have an opportunity to contemplate their own maternal bonds\, as well as the diverse yet common connection to a mother that “links us all to the distant past.” Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel is a poignant setting for Mother\, as for over a century it has provided many with a place for such reflection.  \n\n\n\nMother is curated by Harry Weil\, Green-Wood’s Vice President of Education and Public Programs. Iris McCloughan aided in the installation’s creation as a dramaturg. Mother includes two videos created in 2019 soon after Otake’s mother passed away\, as well as photo prints and objects. The video of the artist speaking is excerpted from “Elegies\,” made in collaboration with John Killacky and Brian Stevenson. The other\, “With Mother in Twilight\,” was filmed by Rebekkah Palov.   \n\n\n\nMade possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nClick here for more information about the artist and installation. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:The Great Fire of 1776
DESCRIPTION:It’s New York City\, summer of 1776\, and an unruly rebel army under General George Washington’s command repeatedly threatened to burn the city rather than let it fall into the hands of the British. In August\, after the patriot’s defeat at the Battle of Brooklyn (a good part of which was fought across what is now The Green-Wood Cemetery)\, Washington makes a miraculous escape with his army across the East River to Manhattan. The British capture New York City\, then much of it mysteriously burned to the ground. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $9\, and $4 for members. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual EventA Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.\n\n\n\n\n\nIn his recently published book\, The Great New York Fire of 1776: A Lost Story of the American Revolution\, Benjamin L. Carp explores that fire and why its origins remained a mystery even after the British investigated it in 1776 and 1783.  \n\n\n\nUncovering stories of espionage\, terror\, and radicalism\, Carp paints a vivid picture of the chaos\, passions\, and unresolved tragedies that define a historical moment we usually associate with “life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness.” Join us for a conversation between Professor Carp and Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman about this little-known\, but important\, event. \n\n\n\nBenjamin L. Carp\, PhD\, is a history professor at CUNY Brooklyn College. His focus is on urban politics\, society\, and culture in eighteenth-century America\, a period about which he has written several books.
