SUMMARY:Gardens as Cosmic Terrains
DESCRIPTION:An Installation in the Catacombs by Heidi Lau\n\n\n\n\n\nImage courtesy of the artist and Matthew Brown Los Angeles. Photo Credit: Charles Benton\n\n\n\nMay 7 – July 10\, 2022Saturdays and Sundays11:00am-5:00pm\n\n\n\nThis installation has been extended through July 10th due to popular demand! \n\n\n\nHeidi Lau became Green-Wood’s first-ever artist in residence in 2021 and her installation in the Catacombs is a culmination of a year-long exploration of the Cemetery. Her highly textured work in clay\, draws on themes of genealogy\, ritual\, and the posthuman\, with sources that include Taoist mythology\, burial customs\, and the built-environment of Macau (where she spent her formative years). Gardens as Cosmic Terrains is influenced by Lau’s research into the cosmological setting within Chinese gardens\, where the arrangement of arches\, pathways\, and vistas acts as a metaphor for time\, space\, and matter—as well as a portal to access both memories and the spirit world.  \n\n\n\nThe Catacombs are an approximately 15-20 minute walk from the Main Entrance. For directions\, pick up a map at the Main Entrance\, or access the map PDF here. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. \n\n\n\nPlease consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April)\n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June)\n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August)\n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing Your Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\nDue to COVID-19\, this tour may be canceled.

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Graveyard Shift: Circuit des Yeux
DESCRIPTION:Co-Presented with Pioneer Works \n\n\n\nThe Graveyard Shift series returns in 2022 with special outdoor performances by Chicago-based experimental songwriter Circuit des Yeux and Brooklyn-based composer and producer Faten Kanaan. \n\n\n\nAmerican cemeteries of the nineteenth century were akin to public parks and once saw visitors picnicking on the lawns\, strolling down meandering paths\, and socializing together as families. In the last century\, however\, these spaces have become more utilitarian in nature and lacking public engagement beyond funerals and grieving. \n\n\n\n\n\nPurchase your tickets here. \n\n\n\nIn-Person Event\n\n\n\n\n\nGraveyard Shift proposes a new way of interacting with the space of the Cemetery by activating it through sight\, sound\, and movement. This performance program features commissions that draw on Green-Wood’s storied landscape and monuments as reference points for producing site-specific works. \n\n\n\nAbout Circuit des Yeux\n\n\n\nHaley Fohr (b. Dec 16 1988) is a vocalist\, composer and singer-songwriter based in Chicago\, Illinois. Her musical endeavors focus around our human condition\, and her 10-year career as Circuit des Yeux has grown into one of America’s most successful efforts to connect the personal to the universal. \n\n\n\nShe is most distinctly identified by her 4-octave voice and unique style of 12-string guitar. Her mysterious “Jackie Lynn” project landed her on the cover of Wire Magazine in August of 2016. Her recent works include an Original Soundtrack for Charles Bryant’s silent film Salomé (1923)\, commissioned by Opera North\, and a critically acclaimed 2017 album Reaching For Indigo\, released on Drag City Records. \n\n\n\nCircuit des Yeux’s first studio album since 2017\, -io\, is her first for Matador Records. The sky over -io is Florida’s strange\, radiant orange. It’s a built environment\, unnatural\, made from concrete and glass\, with skyscrapers that stretch to the vanishing point as you gaze up at them. \n\n\n\nIt’s crumbling and suffocating\, a city perpetually on the brink of collapse\, where tension never topples over into catharsis\, where the heat never breaks. \n\n\n\nInside this world and its closed loop of time\, Fohr found herself able to begin moving again. “I was haunted by memories in the pandemic\,” she says. “As someone with PTSD\, memories are all twisted up inside of me in a way that doesn’t help my higher self. Making this album was once again an exercise of trying to relieve myself of some of that darkness in a way that music has always done for me.” \n\n\n\nAbout Faten Kanaan\n\n\n\nBrooklyn-based composer and producer Faten Kanaan layers cyclical patterns in her music\, using harmony and counterpoint as narrative tools. Sound & silence become intuitive gestures that tell a wordless story and share metaphysical connections. Inspired by cinematic forms and literary story structures: from sweeping landscapes and quiet romances\, to patterned tensions and dream sequences; she focuses on bringing an earthy\, visceral touch to electronic music. In symbiosis with technology is an appreciation for the vulnerability of human limitations and nuances. \n\n\n\nRecently signing to Fire Records\, Faten’s follow up to 2018’s ‘Foxes’ is her fourth album ‘A Mythology of Circles’ (released Nov 2020) which explores the mythologies behind cyclical repetitions in nature and time. \n\n\n\nAbout Pioneer Works\n\n\n\nPioneer Works is a cultural center based in Red Hook\, Brooklyn that is devoted to building community through the arts and sciences. Through a broad range of educational programs\, performances\, residencies\, and exhibitions\, Pioneer Works transcends disciplinary boundaries to foster a community where alternative modes of thought are activated and supported. We strive to make culture accessible to all.
