This simple prompt will be asked of each visitor to After the End\, a new site-specific installation in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. Influenced in equal parts by religious ceremonies and science fiction\, artists Candy Chang and James A. Reeves have created a public ritual to contemplate loss in all forms: the loss of loved ones\, relationships\, health\, and worlds we once knew—as well as the practices that have helped us endure. Visitors are invited to share their experience on a scroll and place it upon an illuminated altar. Lit from within\, each response becomes a devotional candle\, and together they form an evolving field of light. Selected reflections will be projected throughout the Chapel\, and visitors can sit in the apse to contemplate the experiences of others as well as their own. After the End offers a modern refuge that reminds us we are not alone as we mourn the end of one reality and enter the next. \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, Chang and Reeves have collaborated on public rituals to contemplate the human condition. Their installations have been exhibited at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City\, the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles\, and the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia. Inspired by the devotional practices of religion\, the ancient I Ching\, and cyberpunk visions\, Chang and Reeves create public works that facilitate conversations about reckoning with an increasingly alienating world. DESCRIPTION:Heidi Lau and Nikholis Planck\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 23rd-DECEMBER 5TH\, 11:00AM-4:00PMFort Hamilton Gatehouse AtticFree\n\n\n\nSince January 2021\, Heidi Lau\, Green-Wood’s artist in residence\, has been creating ceramic sculptures in a studio space on the first floor of the Fort Hamilton Gatehouse. Just above her a large attic sat relatively quiet except for spiders busily weaving their webs. Nearing the end of her residency\, Lau has invited Nikholis Planck for a two-person exhibition in the attic\, which has been unlocked for the public’s viewing. All of the works on view\, like the spiders’ webs\, are suspended from the roof’s wooden support beams. The title\, chosen by the artists\, refers to the hidden costs of the creative process (teloneum is a Medieval word for a tax on the sale of goods). \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nAttendees are asked to use caution when going up and down the stairs. DESCRIPTION:With over 575\,000 permanent residents\, there’s no shortage of incredible stories at Green-Wood—and Violet Oakley’s does not disappoint! Defying all societal expectations in the early twentieth century\, Oakley became the first American woman to land a public mural commission—for the Pennsylvania State capitol—at only 28 years old\, which was unheard of in a male dominated field. Oakley was one of  the “Red Rose Girls\,” a trio of artists who lived and worked together in a communal art gallery—something that pushed against the gender roles of their time. Today\, she is regarded as an early member of the LGBTQ+ community\, having lived with her partner Edith Emerson for over 45 years. We’ll be joined virtually by Dr. Bailey Van Hook\, Violet Oakley expert and professor emerita of art history at Virginia Tech\, for a lively discussion with Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman about the artist’s fascinating life. \n\n\n\nOver the course of Dr. Van Hook’s career as a writer\, professor\, and historian\, she has shed light on women as both creators and subjects in American art. She is the author of Violet Oakley: An Artist’s Life\, the first biography of the groundbreaking artist and the result of 15 years of research and extensive travels in pursuits to capture the full story of Oakley. \n\n\n\nJeffrey I. Just above her a large attic sat relatively quiet except for spiders busily weaving their webs. Nearing the end of her residency\, Lau has invited Nikholis Planck for a two-person exhibition in the attic\, which has been unlocked for the public’s viewing. All of the works on view\, like the spiders’ webs\, are suspended from the roof’s wooden support beams. The title\, chosen by the artists\, refers to the hidden costs of the creative process (teloneum is a Medieval word for a tax on the sale of goods). \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. By September\, offspring of these nesting birds will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. Large numbers of blackbirds\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, vireos\, and swallows will also be passing through. By October\, waterfowl are returning\, and we’ll look for raptors heading south. DESCRIPTION:Heidi Lau and Nikholis Planck\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 23rd-DECEMBER 5TH\, 11:00AM-4:00PMFort Hamilton Gatehouse AtticFree\n\n\n\nSince January 2021\, Heidi Lau\, Green-Wood’s artist in residence\, has been creating ceramic sculptures in a studio space on the first floor of the Fort Hamilton Gatehouse. Just above her a large attic sat relatively quiet except for spiders busily weaving their webs. Nearing the end of her residency\, Lau has invited Nikholis Planck for a two-person exhibition in the attic\, which has been unlocked for the public’s viewing. All of the works on view\, like the spiders’ webs\, are suspended from the roof’s wooden support beams. The title\, chosen by the artists\, refers to the hidden costs of the creative process (teloneum is a Medieval word for a tax on the sale of goods). \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Selected reflections will be projected throughout the Chapel\, and visitors can sit in the apse to contemplate the experiences of others as well as their own. After the End offers a modern refuge that reminds us we are not alone as we mourn the end of one reality and enter the next. \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, Chang and Reeves have collaborated on public rituals to contemplate the human condition. DESCRIPTION:Cemeteries are more than places for the dead\, they are places for the living to remember and honor those who came before us\, allowing their legacies to live on. That’s why Green-Wood launched its World War II Project in February 2021—eighty years after America entered the war. With the help of friends and family\, we’re identifying and honoring the soldiers and civilians who served our country in WWII and now rest at Green-Wood. So far\, hundreds of descendants have contacted us about their ancestors who served. One soldier stood guard at the Nuremberg Trials. Another defended Pearl Harbor. One woman was a real-life “Rosie the Riveter.” \n\n\n\nJoin Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, who launched the World War II Project\, for an opportunity to visit the graves of some of these fascinating people\, hear their stories\, and see their faces in the photographs family members have shared with us. \n\n\n\n\n\n$30/ $25 for members. DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood isn’t wanting for extraordinary and monumental tombs\, but many of its most remarkable residents lay buried under unmarked\, modest\, or sunken stones. It’s no wonder that visitors spend so much time looking for graves that are often easy to miss! You’ll learn about some of Green-Wood’s lesser-known—but equally fascinating—monuments across our 478 acres. We’ll deepdive into the monuments of Elizabeth Gloucester\, whose fortune helped fund John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry; Charles M. Murphy\, the cyclist who raced alongside a moving train; and Fanny Palmer\, the prolific (yet\, often overlooked!) artist of Currier and Ives. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. DESCRIPTION:A Ritual ABOUT LOSS by Candy Chang and James A. Reeves\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSEPTEMBER 15TH-DECEMBER 6TH\, 10AM-4:30PMHistoric ChapelFree\n\n\n\nDescribe your loss. This simple prompt will be asked of each visitor to After the End\, a new site-specific installation in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. Influenced in equal parts by religious ceremonies and science fiction\, artists Candy Chang and James A. Reeves have created a public ritual to contemplate loss in all forms: the loss of loved ones\, relationships\, health\, and worlds we once knew—as well as the practices that have helped us endure. Visitors are invited to share their experience on a scroll and place it upon an illuminated altar. Lit from within\, each response becomes a devotional candle\, and together they form an evolving field of light. Selected reflections will be projected throughout the Chapel\, and visitors can sit in the apse to contemplate the experiences of others as well as their own. After the End offers a modern refuge that reminds us we are not alone as we mourn the end of one reality and enter the next. \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, Chang and Reeves have collaborated on public rituals to contemplate the human condition. Their installations have been exhibited at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City\, the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles\, and the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia. Inspired by the devotional practices of religion\, the ancient I Ching\, and cyberpunk visions\, Chang and Reeves create public works that facilitate conversations about reckoning with an increasingly alienating world. DESCRIPTION:Discover the rich history and traditions associated with the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) through crafts\, activities\, and food for families with kids of all ages. Celebrated throughout Mexico from October 31st to November 2nd\, this holiday is a time for family and friends to commemorate departed loved ones through prayer\, altars\, music\, and dance. \n\n\n\n¡Y Hablamos Español! \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. Reservation is recommended so that we may gauge attendance. Walk-ins are welcomed.
