SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Gardens as Cosmic Terrains
DESCRIPTION:An Installation in the Catacombs by Heidi Lau\n\n\n\n\n\nImage courtesy of the artist and Matthew Brown Los Angeles. Photo Credit: Charles Benton\n\n\n\nMay 7 – July 10\, 2022Saturdays and Sundays11:00am-5:00pm\n\n\n\nThis installation has been extended through July 10th due to popular demand! \n\n\n\nHeidi Lau became Green-Wood’s first-ever artist in residence in 2021 and her installation in the Catacombs is a culmination of a year-long exploration of the Cemetery. Her highly textured work in clay\, draws on themes of genealogy\, ritual\, and the posthuman\, with sources that include Taoist mythology\, burial customs\, and the built-environment of Macau (where she spent her formative years). Gardens as Cosmic Terrains is influenced by Lau’s research into the cosmological setting within Chinese gardens\, where the arrangement of arches\, pathways\, and vistas acts as a metaphor for time\, space\, and matter—as well as a portal to access both memories and the spirit world.  \n\n\n\nThe Catacombs are an approximately 15-20 minute walk from the Main Entrance. For directions\, pick up a map at the Main Entrance\, or access the map PDF here. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. \n\n\n\nPlease consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Into the Night: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:How do we live in full knowledge that one day we will die? How will we go into the night? Gently or raging\, with equanimity or denial? Or will we see death as something to be fought\, even possibly conquered? What are the narratives that console\, and give meaning? In this challenging era of collective grief\, these questions have even greater urgency.  \n\n\n\nFollowing the successful debut of Into the Night: Portraits of Life and Death\, Part One\, which aired on PBS in 2018 (and was screened at Green-Wood)\, Part Two explores new territory as it continues—and deepens—the essential questions and conversations about our shared human destiny. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $10\, and $5 for members. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe film\, written and directed by Helen Whitney\, features intimate\, provocative stories of nine men and women forever changed by their encounters with mortality. Through the lenses of Buddhism\, a cancer diagnosis\, a Native American vision quest\, Talmudic perspectives\, artistic pursuits\, medical advances in aging and longevity\, and breakthrough technologies\, they challenge us to rethink our place in the universe. These dramatic first-hand accounts unsettle\, awaken\, and inspire. \n\n\n\nHelen Whitney is an Emmy-winning\, Peabody-winning\, and Oscar-nominated filmmaker. Her films have appeared on major networks and covered a range of topics including the McCarthy era and mental illness.
