SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly-Spring Migration \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Rooftop Films Presents: Cemetery Shorts
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRooftop Films and Green-Wood invite you to gather for a cinematic meditation on the living\, the dead\, and those caught in between the two. Whether it’s contemplating the mortality of a pet turtle\, embalming a beloved one to sustain its spirit in the flesh\, or killing in the name of life—the characters in these short films are driven by death and grief\, no matter how they may try to avoid or deny it. (For the full lineup\, click here.) \n\n\n\nThe protagonists of these stories experience emotions and coping mechanisms as multifaceted as the circumstances and settings surrounding the rituals of dying they must face. While there is no guidebook for navigating the mortal process\, these films will show you the eternal and the ephemeral while weaving bits of laughter through the grand abyss. Come join in on the conversation at Green-Wood’s historic and idyllic grounds. \n\n\n\nCheck in will be at the Main Entrance on 25th Street and Fifth Avenue\, but the screening location will be about a 10-15 minute walk from there. Bring your ticket (either printed or on your phone) and we will check your tickets with a contactless check in scanner. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n\n\n\nSAFETY PROTOCOLS\n\n\n\n– Attendees will be subject to a mandatory temperature check at the door\, unless you prefer to provide proof of vaccination.  \n\n\n\n– Masks will be required while inside of the venue and while interacting with staff. \n\n\n\n– Seating will be arranged in pods (up to 4 people) so that you may sit together with your group\, but remain socially distanced from those not in your group \n\n\n\n– Green-Wood reserves the right to deny entry to any visitor who refuses to comply with the safety guidelines. \n\n\n\nIf you observe a situation or behavior that does not reflect these protocols\, please advise an ambassador or other staff member immediately. With everyone’s cooperation this will be a memorable and safe unique experience.

SUMMARY:Mortality and Me: Green-Wood’s Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Gerard Fortune\, Gede (Ghede\, Guede)\n\n\n\nIt can be difficult to engage in conversations about death: Will I say the wrong thing? Am I going to offend someone? Who wants to discuss that morbid stuff anyway? Green-Wood’s book club\, Mortality & Me\, will help make death\, dying\, and end-of-life matters an easier subject to talk about through compelling books that tackle these topics head on.  \n\n\n\nFor this book club session\, we will be discussing Bernice McFadden’s Gathering of Waters. Narrated by Money\, Mississippi\, this engrossing historical speculative novel weaves the real-life story of Emmett Till\, a 14-year-old Chicagoan child who was brutally murdered in 1955. Till’s murder in the town of Money helped ignite the Civil Rights Movement. And don’t worry—you don’t need to read the book in its entirety. Three designated sections\, which will be the basis of our conversation\, will be emailed in advance. \n\n\n\nMortality & Me’s moderator\, Josie Wells\, is the creator and facilitator of Footnotes & Indexes Book Club whose mission is to connect people to literature that feeds their curiosity and articulates their lived experiences as a form of community activism. She holds degrees in African American Studies and English from Rutgers University and is an award-winning journalist. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, suggested donation $10. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYour donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought provoking programs in death education at little or no cost to you. SUMMARY:Pioneering Photographers of Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION:It’s easy to take photography for granted when everyone has a camera in their pocket–but the medium has been around for an even less time than Green-Wood has! And there are some really fascinating permanent residents here who played key roles in the emergence of photography. Join our historian\, Jeff Richman\, for a virtual tour of some of these individuals: the man sent by Louis Daguerre (who invented photography) to introduce his miraculous invention to America; the savant whose gravestone claims that he was the first to take a photograph of the human face\,the man who met Daguerre in France and became a pioneer of American photography (hint: he’s also known for the invention of the telegraph!)\, and many more. The discussion will be illustrated by images of some of the best photographs in Green-Wood’s Collections (not normally accessible to the public). \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Digging into Urban Soils: Research at Green-Wood and NYC
DESCRIPTION:Soil is just a fancy word for dirt\, right? No way! Soil may often be overlooked\, but it is essential to the health of the human body and natural environment. It provides essential ecosystem services such as productivity (plants need it to grow!)\, regulation of water flow\, nutrient cycling\, biodiversity\, and so much more! The rising interest in urban ecology has seen a revolution in how city dwellers are looking at soil\, including increasing numbers of practitioners in community gardens and urban agriculture\, green infrastructure\, and composting. For this evening’s presentation\, Richard K. Shaw\, former USDA-NRCS State Soil Scientist\, will examine the diversity of soil types in New York City and the forces that have helped shape them. Get a peek at some past and present soil-related projects at Green-Wood and their implications beyond the Cemetery. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the horticulture and wildlife of Green-Wood\, Zooming in on Nature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$5/Free for members\, RSVP required. SUMMARY:Surnames in Stone: A Glossary of Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION:What’s in a name? With over 570\,000 permanent residents\, Green-Wood’s monuments capture thousands of surnames in stone—from the common to the unusual. Wandering the grounds you’re likely to come upon some names that ring a bell: a local street name\, an exotic bird\, or an adjective.  \n\n\n\nDuring the pandemic\, Alex Thurman\, ever the cataloger and word-lover\, discovered the Cemetery\, and the fascinating grave marker inscriptions that happened to be common English words. Before he knew it\, his lockdown interest resulted in the creation of Green-Wood Glossary: A Wording Expedition\, a photography project: to capture his unique finds. Join Alex\, along with Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, for a quirky look at the Cemetery’s monuments and permanent residents.  \n\n\n\nAlex Thurman is the Web Resources Collection Coordinator at Columbia University Libraries\, where he builds diverse web archive collections on topics including human rights\, New York City\, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Living near Green-Wood\, he began exploring the Cemetery during the pandemic and has since become a regular visitor and member.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members.
