SUMMARY:Digging into Urban Soils: Research at Green-Wood and NYC
DESCRIPTION:Soil is just a fancy word for dirt\, right? No way! Soil may often be overlooked\, but it is essential to the health of the human body and natural environment. It provides essential ecosystem services such as productivity (plants need it to grow!)\, regulation of water flow\, nutrient cycling\, biodiversity\, and so much more! The rising interest in urban ecology has seen a revolution in how city dwellers are looking at soil\, including increasing numbers of practitioners in community gardens and urban agriculture\, green infrastructure\, and composting. For this evening’s presentation\, Richard K. Shaw\, former USDA-NRCS State Soil Scientist\, will examine the diversity of soil types in New York City and the forces that have helped shape them. Get a peek at some past and present soil-related projects at Green-Wood and their implications beyond the Cemetery. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the horticulture and wildlife of Green-Wood\, Zooming in on Nature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$5/Free for members\, RSVP required. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Surnames in Stone: A Glossary of Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION:What’s in a name? With over 570\,000 permanent residents\, Green-Wood’s monuments capture thousands of surnames in stone—from the common to the unusual. Wandering the grounds you’re likely to come upon some names that ring a bell: a local street name\, an exotic bird\, or an adjective.  \n\n\n\nDuring the pandemic\, Alex Thurman\, ever the cataloger and word-lover\, discovered the Cemetery\, and the fascinating grave marker inscriptions that happened to be common English words. Before he knew it\, his lockdown interest resulted in the creation of Green-Wood Glossary: A Wording Expedition\, a photography project: to capture his unique finds. Join Alex\, along with Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, for a quirky look at the Cemetery’s monuments and permanent residents.  \n\n\n\nAlex Thurman is the Web Resources Collection Coordinator at Columbia University Libraries\, where he builds diverse web archive collections on topics including human rights\, New York City\, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Living near Green-Wood\, he began exploring the Cemetery during the pandemic and has since become a regular visitor and member.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly-Spring Migration \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. Out of that reflection came America/Beautiful\, a project where she commissioned more than seventy of the leading composers in the United States to each write a variation on America the Beautiful. The result is a sonic picture of Kwon’s adopted country\, painted in all of its sprawling complexity\, which ultimately seeks to find the beauty at the heart of the American experiment\, and to realize its credo of e pluribus unum (out of many\, one). \n\n\n\nThe Short Story\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlthough these past few years have left us deeply divided\, America/Beautiful seeks to embrace our diversity\, and remember that by understanding\, appreciating\, and celebrating our differences\, we become stronger both as individuals and as a country.  \n\n\n\n$80.
SUMMARY:Agnes Northrop: Tiffany Stained-Glass Artist
DESCRIPTION:Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933)\, who is interred at Green-Wood\, remains a giant among American artists. Best known today for the stained-glass lamps produced in his studio\, he also was a painter\, interior designer\, and a pioneer in American glass. But he could not create all that art alone. Indeed\, Agnes Northrop (1857–1953)\, who went to work for Tiffany in the 1880s\, designed some of that firm’s most magnificent stained-glass windows. And now\, after all these years\, she is getting credit for doing so! Join host Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman and Lindsy Parrott\, director and curator at the Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass in Queens—an expert on all things Louis Comfort Tiffany—as they discuss Northrop’s extraordinary work. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members.
