SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

DESCRIPTION:It’s a New York City favorite\, now in its twenty-second year! Bring a blanket and enjoy this free early summer performance. The concert honoring veterans features The New York City Symphonic Band at Third Street\, led by music director Paul Corn\, and is hosted by guest conductor Brian P. Worsdale. You’ll enjoy the musical works of Green-Wood’s permanent residents Fred Ebb\, Louis Moreau Gottschalk\, Leonard Bernstein\, and others.  \n\n\n\nThe Battle of Brooklyn\, fought in 1776 on land that is now a part of Green-Wood\, was the first battle of the American Revolution to occur after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Green-Wood hosts a series of programs in commemoration of those who served to defend the young republic. See parades\, cannon fire\, horses\, and re-enactments. This is a great event for kids and families. \n\n\n\n10–11 am – TROLLEY TOUR: Join author Barnet Schecter and Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman for a tour of Green-Wood’s Revolutionary War-related sites. This is a separate\, ticketed tour\, not included in general registration for the commemoration events. Please click here for tickets. \n\n\n\n11 am – LIFE ON THE BATTLEFIELD: Meet soldiers (along with their horses!) and famous colonial Americans. Historical reenactors will demonstrate revolutionary weapons and tactics. \n\n\n\n12:30 pm – BATTLE OF BROOKLYN PARADE: Grab a Revolutionary regiment flag\, wave it high\, and march to Battle Hill with the Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. \n\n\n\n1:15 pm – COMMEMORATION CEREMONY: Honor the spirit and heroes of the Battle of Brooklyn at this commemoration on Battle Hill\, overlooking New York Harbor. \n\n\n\nThese events are free\, excluding the trolley tour\, but please register online so that we can gauge response. We encourage you to consider making an optional donation with your reservation to ensure our ability to continue to offer these events free of charge. \n\n\n\nPlease note: Attendees must stand within the designated viewing areas when the cannons are being fired. The loud noises can cause permanent damage to the ears or even hearing loss. \n\n\n\nLocation: The Meadow\, located near the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street. \n\n\n\nClick here for our inclement weather policy.
