SUMMARY:Annie Tinker: Tireless Suffragist and Women’s Rights Champion
DESCRIPTION:Despite being born into wealth\, Annie Tinker (1884-1924) was not one to rest on her family’s laurels. She used her privilege to contribute time and resources to social movements—with women’s rights resting particularly close to her heart. She regularly led an all-women’s cavalry unit through Central Park and in women’s suffrage parades\, lobbying that they be sent off to fight in World War I. In fact\, she volunteered as a nurse in Europe during World War I. After her untimely death at age 39\, a bequest in her will financed a foundation to provide stipends to older women so that they could remain independent in their later years. Join Catherine Tinker (no relation)\, a professor of international law and former head of the Annie Tinker Association for Women\, and who is working on a book about Annie\, for a lively discussion of the fascinating—and fearless—Annie Tinker\, now a resident of Green-Wood. \n\n\n\nThe Annie Tinker Association for Women is a not-for-profit organization founded in the 1920s as the result of Tinker’s bequest. Today\, the Association follows in Tinker’s footsteps\, providing financial assistance to elderly retired working women so that they may remain in their homes and continue to be involved community members. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. DESCRIPTION:In just four years\, the Civil War shaped the United States in a way that no other war has. And who better to dish about what happened in New York City than George Templeton Strong? Once a well-connected lawyer and a trustee of both Trinity Church and Columbia College (but also a man who reflected the racial\, ethnic\, and religious prejudices of his time)\, he is now perhaps best known for the extensive private diary (never actually intended for publication) that he kept from 1835 until his death in 1875. Strong’s writings detail the turbulent state of a country at war\, from the years leading up to the conflict through the tragic aftermath. Matt Dellinger\, writer and student of history\, will join Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman to discuss Strong’s candid observations and dive deep into his unique insider’s view of the Civil War\, touching upon individuals and stories deeply connected to Green-Wood’s own history.  \n\n\n\nMatt Dellinger has written for The New Yorker\, the Oxford American\, The New York Times\, and The Atlantic\, and has reported on transportation and planning for WNYC. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly-Spring Migration \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant.
