SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION: \nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the main entrance on 25th Street or to print here. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nEarly-Spring Migration\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration\nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring Cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n \n$10 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $15 for non-members \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:Dead Distillers Trolley Tour
DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the distillery. \n \nYou must be 21 or older to participate in this tour; I.D. required. \n \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $40 for non-members \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. In order to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device on the trolley\, advance arrangements must be made. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1. Please note that portions of the tour take place outside the trolley and may require exiting the vehicle on multiple occasions. SUMMARY:Alive at Green-Wood: Exploring an Urban Oasis
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Sara Evans\n \n \n \n \n \nThere’s much more to a cemetery than death. There’s life—a lot of it. In fact\, since its founding in the nineteenth century as part of the Rural Cemetery Movement\, before there was a Central Park\, Green-Wood has been a place to engage with the natural world in an urban environment. Whether walking through the cherry tree allée\, encountering the green monk parakeets that live in the Arch\, or standing beneath a towering dawn redwood\, you’ll learn about the environmental diversity that makes this Cemetery one of the city’s great natural resources. \n \nComfortable footwear is recommended. Please note\, tour route is on grass and uneven terrain. \n \n$15 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $20 for non-members \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount.
SUMMARY:Maria Sabina: Shaman\, Curandera\, and Visionary Poet
DESCRIPTION:In 1957\, Life magazine published a photo essay\, “Seeking the Magic Mushroom\,” featuring Maria Sabina\, a curandera (healer) and shaman living in the Sierra Mazateca in southern Mexico. Sabina was the first to allow foreigners to take part in veladas\, healing vigils when participants eat psilocybin mushrooms. The essay opened Western audiences’ eyes to the use of psychedelics and led\, ultimately\, to the synthesizing of LSD. \nIn this illustrated talk\, poet\, novelist\, and diplomat Homero Aridjis will share his first-hand accounts of meeting Maria Sabina\, whom he sees not only as a cultural icon\, but also as arguably the greatest visionary poet in twentieth-century Latin America. Aridjis’s 2013 novel Carne de Dios\, centers on Sabina’s life in Huautla and her involvement with Westerners who flocked to her home to experience the hallucinogenic effects of the “magic mushrooms”. \nConsidered to be one of Latin America’s greatest living writers\, Aridjis is also widely known for his pioneering work as an environmental activist and his two-term stint as president of PEN International. Aridjis has served as Mexico’s Ambassador to Switzerland\, The Netherlands\, and UNESCO. Many of his fifty books of poetry and prose have been translated into fifteen languages and he has received important literary and environmental prizes in Mexico\, France\, Italy\, the United States and Serbia. Among his books available in English are The Child Poet\, Eyes to See Otherwise\, A Time of Angels\, Maria the Monarch\, and News of the Earth\, a biography of his relationship with the natural world and a wide-ranging selection of his work and writings in defense of the environment. \nFollowing will be a wine reception where you can meet Homero and bring any copies of his books for signing. \nTickets are $20 / $15 for members of Green-Wood and the Morbid Anatomy Patreon. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. SUMMARY:The Art of the Condolence Letter
DESCRIPTION:We all struggle to find the right words. We want to convey sympathy\, admiration\, and support. And we want to express ourselves as well as possible. Why not take inspiration from another time? Condolence letters of the nineteenth century\, when death was ever present\, were mainstays of life—missives of comfort written straight from the heart. Death educator Amy Cunningham will lead a practical guide to crafting messages that heal and knowing what’s best left unsaid. Along the way\, she’ll share condolences written by luminaries including Thomas Jefferson\, Emily Dickinson\, Queen Victoria\, Marcel Proust\, and Ernest Hemingway. \n \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. SUMMARY:Furnishing a Tomb in Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:Lid from a Sarcophagus\, ca. 1292-1075 B.C.E. Terracotta\, pigment\, 24 x 17 x 8 1/2 in.\, 40 lb. (61 x 43.2 x 21.6 cm\, 18.14kg). Brooklyn Museum\, Charles Edwin Wilbour Fund\, 37.1518E. Creative Commons-BY (Photo: Brooklyn Museum\, 37.1518E_PS1.jpg)\nAncient Egyptian kings like Tutankhamun could have anything he wanted for his tomb. But the king’s subjects\, ordinary middle-class Egyptians\, were forced to make choices about the objects they included in their tombs. They wanted to guarantee their entrance to the next world\, but they simply could not afford everything that royalty had. This lecture explores how Egyptians furnished their tombs on a budget. Their strategies included choosing cheaper materials\, combining two or more necessary objects into one item\, or even buying a coffin second hand. Examples of all these strategies will be illustrated and explained. \n \nThis evening is presented in partnership with Morbid Anatomy. \n \nEdward Bleiberg is Senior Curator of Egyptian Art at the Brooklyn Museum. He joined the Museum in 1998 from the University of Memphis\, Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology\, where he had been Director and Associate Professor. A Pittsburgh native\, he graduated from Haverford College in Pennsylvania. Dr. Bleiberg received an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He is the author of several books and articles on the ancient Egyptian economy\, Egyptian coffins\, and the Jewish minority in ancient Egypt and ancient Rome. Exhibitions that Dr. Bleiberg has organized for Brooklyn include Jewish Life in Ancient Egypt\, Tree of Paradise: Jewish Mosaics from the Roman Empire\, To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum\, Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies from ancient Egypt and Striking Power: Iconoclasm in Ancient Egypt. \n \n$5 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $10 for non-members \n \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. By February we’ll see some of the early north-bound birds beginning to trickle back into the area. \n \n$10 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $15 for non-members \n \nGreen-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the main entrance on 25th Street or to print here. SUMMARY:Winter Street Tree Care Workshop
DESCRIPTION: \nJoin Ashleigh Pettus\, Operations Manager for Trees New York\, and learn how to care for your street trees and help them thrive. Topics discussed will include watering\, mulching\, and tree bed gardening. We will also discuss why street trees are important to the urban environment. Click here to register directly for this day’s program. \n \nThe meeting location is Green-Wood’s Modern Chapel\, right off of the main entrance. \n \n*** \nGive Trees a Chance: Environmental Justice in South Brooklyn \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet\, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. Visit TreesNY’s website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to RSVP for these free programs. \nFunding for this project is provided by the NYS Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant Program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION: \nJust because it’s winter\, doesn’t mean that there aren’t interesting birds to discover in Green-Wood. For some bird species that migrate south after the breeding season\, Brooklyn is their Miami during the cold months. Spend the early morning exploring the cemetery\, looking for overwintering waterfowl\, nuthatches\, woodpeckers\, sparrows\, finches and any half-hardy birds that decided to stick around. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nFor this program you will check in at the Gothic Arches\, right at the main entrance.
Please contact the Historic Fund for more information. \n \nFor this program you will check in at the Gothic Arches\, right at the main entrance. Trolley tours are run rain or shine\, with the exception of dangerous conditions as determined by Green-Wood.
