DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. As an accredited arboretum\, the Cemetery has over 7\,000 trees and a master plan that includes new interpretive panels (signs) across the grounds. DESCRIPTION: \n \n \n \n \nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the birds that make Green-Wood their home – at least temporarily. By September\, offspring of these nesting birds will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. Large numbers of blackbirds\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, vireos\, and swallows will also be passing through. By October\, waterfowl are returning\, and we’ll look for raptors heading south. DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood is teaming up with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the storied past of distilling in Brooklyn. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Female bees are collecting nectar and pollen\, and males are busily looking for mates. Bee biologist Sarah Kornbluth of the American Museum of Natural History leads this walking tour to highlight how bees live\, the resources they need\, and where they make their homes across the cemetery. Learn about the diversity of wild bee species (including bumble\, carpenter\, miner\, leaf cutter\, sweat\, and more) and beecome a bee expert in just two hours.  \n \nComfortable footwear recommended. DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Brooklyn\, fought in 1776 on land that is now a part of Green-Wood\, was the first battle of the American Revolution to be waged after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Green-Wood hosts a day of commemoration to honor all those who served to defend the young republic. See parades\, cannon fire\, horses\, and re-enactments. This is a great event for kids and families! \n(SOLD OUT) 10 – 11 a.m. – TROLLEY TOUR: Join author and historian Barnet Schecter and Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman for a tour of Green-Wood’s Revolutionary War-related sites. This is a separate\, ticketed tour\, not included in general registration for the Commemoration events. Please click here to join the waitlist. \n11 a.m. – LIFE ON THE BATTLEFIELD: Meet soldiers\, their horses\, and famous colonial Americans. Historic re-enactors will demonstrate revolutionary weapons and tactics. \n12:30 p.m. – BATTLE OF BROOKLYN PARADE: Grab a Revolutionary regiment flag\, wave it high\, and march to Battle Hill with The Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. For The Angel’s Share\, the Naughtons will play a program bookended by Leonard Bernstein\, in celebration of his 100th birthday year (and because his final resting place is but a stone’s throw from the Catacombs). DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the main entrance on 25th Street or to print here. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nBirds of Early-Spring Migration\nSunday\, April 8\, 15\, 22\, & 29 from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nMay 5 and 6 (Sat/Sun)\, 13 (Sun)\, 19 and 20 (Sat/Sun)\, & 27 (Sun) from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM \nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding Sundays\nJune & July from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM (except July 1st)\nSunday August 5th from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM & August 19th from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. SUMMARY:Tree Stewardship
DESCRIPTION: \nTrees New York’s Tree Stewardship Training is designed to train and mobilize New Yorkers so that they can play an active role in supporting the health of our urban forest. Trees New York’s Environmental Educators teach lessons on the value of a healthy urban forest and the importance of volunteer efforts. Following each lesson\, volunteers steward street trees. Trees New York’s Environmental Educators work alongside volunteers to guide their stewardship efforts and answer questions. \nTrees New York works with both youth and adult volunteers and works throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Our target neighborhoods for 2018 include: Greenpoint\, Western Queens and Northern Manhattan.  \nVolunteer stewardship activities include:  \nTree bed clean up and soil cultivation – In addition to being unsightly\, compacted soil and litter block the movement of oxygen\, water and nutrients to tree roots. Volunteers remove litter and weeds from tree beds and loosen up the surface soil with hand cultivators\nWatering Trees – New York City street trees live in permanent drought conditions. All trees\, especially newly planted trees\, need thorough and deep watering during the spring and summer. Volunteers water trees using buckets and hoses. \nMulching – Mulch conserves water\, moderates soil temperatures\, improves soil structure and mitigates damage from dogs\, people\, de-icing salts and cleaning agents. Volunteers mulch trees with mulch or woodchips. \nTree Bed Gardening – Flowers beautify the streetscape\, add enriching organic matter to the soil and help deter people from walking on tree beds. In the spring\, volunteers plant annual flowers such as impatiens\, coleus and begonias and in the fall\, we plant bulbs such as muscari\, crocus and daffodil. \n*** \nGive Trees a Chance: Environmental Justice in South Brooklyn  \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet\, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us.
