DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the main entrance on 25th Street or to print here. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nBirds of Early-Spring Migration\nSunday\, April 8\, 15\, 22\, & 29 from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nMay 5 and 6 (Sat/Sun)\, 13 (Sun)\, 19 and 20 (Sat/Sun)\, & 27 (Sun) from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM \nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding Sundays\nJune & July from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM (except July 1st)\nSunday August 5th from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM & August 19th from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Anna Stypko\nFresh off its SXSW premiere\, the dramatic comedy Wild Nights with Emily stars Molly Shannon as the poet Emily Dickinson. The film was inspired by an article in the New York Times that documented how infrared technologies restored erasures that hid romantic content in Dickinson’s letters. The poet’s persona\, popularized since her death\, was that of a reclusive spinster – a delicate wallflower\, too sensitive for this world. This film explores her passionate\, vivacious side that was covered up for years – most notably Emily’s lifelong romantic relationship with another woman (Susan Ziegler). After Emily died\, a rivalry emerged when her brother’s mistress (Amy Seimetz) along with editor T.W. Higginson (Brett Gelman) published a book of Emily’s poems. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. DESCRIPTION:Credit: William Wood\nDeath is notable for its universality\, but death and dying are often experienced differently by those in the LGBTQ community.  Disparities associated with social inequality as well as institutionalized homophobia and transphobia greatly affect the mental and physical health of LBGTQ persons worldwide. The Center for Disease Control stresses the “need for culturally competent medical care and prevention services” specific to this population. \nJoin death educator Amy Cunningham\, trust and  estate attorney Michael Bond\, Esq.\, funeral celebrant Donna Henes\, and Teresa Theophano\, Assistant Director of Care Management Services at SAGE\, the advocacy group for LGBTQ elders\, in a conversation about death\, dying\, and  funeral rituals in the LGBTQ community. Panelists will explore a range of topics\, including historic precedents (among them the discovery of a same sex couple’s tomb in ancient Egypt)\, the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the rise of alternative bereavement\, and the creation of non-traditional families when many churches and  families of LGBTQ people turned their backs on – or failed to recognize – their LGBTQ members. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the main entrance on 25th Street or to print here. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nBirds of Early-Spring Migration\nSunday\, April 8\, 15\, 22\, & 29 from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nMay 5 and 6 (Sat/Sun)\, 13 (Sun)\, 19 and 20 (Sat/Sun)\, & 27 (Sun) from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM \nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding Sundays\nJune & July from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM (except July 1st)\nSunday August 5th from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM & August 19th from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the main entrance on 25th Street or to print here. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nBirds of Early-Spring Migration\nSunday\, April 8\, 15\, 22\, & 29 from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nMay 5 and 6 (Sat/Sun)\, 13 (Sun)\, 19 and 20 (Sat/Sun)\, & 27 (Sun) from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM \nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding Sundays\nJune & July from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM (except July 1st)\nSunday August 5th from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM & August 19th from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring Cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n \nGrab a copy of our Bird Checklist before you begin.
