SUMMARY:After the End
DESCRIPTION:A Ritual ABOUT LOSS by Candy Chang and James A. Reeves\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSEPTEMBER 15TH-DECEMBER 6TH\, 10AM-4:30PMHistoric ChapelFree\n\n\n\nDescribe your loss. This simple prompt will be asked of each visitor to After the End\, a new site-specific installation in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. Influenced in equal parts by religious ceremonies and science fiction\, artists Candy Chang and James A. Reeves have created a public ritual to contemplate loss in all forms: the loss of loved ones\, relationships\, health\, and worlds we once knew—as well as the practices that have helped us endure. Visitors are invited to share their experience on a scroll and place it upon an illuminated altar. Lit from within\, each response becomes a devotional candle\, and together they form an evolving field of light. Selected reflections will be projected throughout the Chapel\, and visitors can sit in the apse to contemplate the experiences of others as well as their own. After the End offers a modern refuge that reminds us we are not alone as we mourn the end of one reality and enter the next. \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, Chang and Reeves have collaborated on public rituals to contemplate the human condition. Their installations have been exhibited at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City\, the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles\, and the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia. Inspired by the devotional practices of religion\, the ancient I Ching\, and cyberpunk visions\, Chang and Reeves create public works that facilitate conversations about reckoning with an increasingly alienating world. To learn more\, visit ritualfields.com. \n\n\n\nAfter the End was made possible by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nDue to the overwhelming popular response to After the End\, the installation has now been extended through December 6th! \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Latent Teloneum
DESCRIPTION:Heidi Lau and Nikholis Planck\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 23rd-DECEMBER 5TH\, 11:00AM-4:00PMFort Hamilton Gatehouse AtticFree\n\n\n\nSince January 2021\, Heidi Lau\, Green-Wood’s artist in residence\, has been creating ceramic sculptures in a studio space on the first floor of the Fort Hamilton Gatehouse. Just above her a large attic sat relatively quiet except for spiders busily weaving their webs. Nearing the end of her residency\, Lau has invited Nikholis Planck for a two-person exhibition in the attic\, which has been unlocked for the public’s viewing. All of the works on view\, like the spiders’ webs\, are suspended from the roof’s wooden support beams. The title\, chosen by the artists\, refers to the hidden costs of the creative process (teloneum is a Medieval word for a tax on the sale of goods). \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nAttendees are asked to use caution when going up and down the stairs. Please do not touch any of the work on view.  \n\n\n\nThe Fort Hamilton Gatehouse is located near the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and Miceli Place.

SUMMARY:Death Cafe: After the End Edition
DESCRIPTION:“The moon is a stone and the sky is full of deadly hardware\, but oh God\, how beautiful anyway.” —Margaret Atwood \n\n\n\nIn this special edition Death Cafe\, we will be joined by artists Candy Chang and James Reeves\, whose newest collaboration\, After the End\, is currently on view in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. Candy and James will open the discussion with  their insights on grieving and ritual in the twenty-first century\, touching on the ways in which science fiction speaks to mortality. We will gather at the Historic Chapel to immerse ourselves in After the End\, a stunning public ritual about loss and grief\, then transition to the Modern Chapel for discussion. \n\n\n\nThe Death Cafe is a simple concept. It was inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or cafe) where people gathered informally to discuss ideas. Death Cafes apply this concept to the most universal topic of all\, death\, creating an opportunity for all of us to share our thoughts and feelings on this difficult topic. \n\n\n\nLocation: Check-in takes place at the Main Entrance Arch at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue. During the first half hour you are invited to explore the installation in the Historic Chapel before moving to the Modern Chapel for the remainder of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Please consider a donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMandatory Safety Protocols\n\n\n\nThis is an indoor program. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: A Grave Concern Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Once a burial takes place\, it’s all about resting in peace for eternity\, right? Well\, that wasn’t always the case! In the nineteenth century\, the shockingly profitable “resurrection” business emerged. Grave robbers sneakily stole bodies from cemeteries under the cover of night to sell them to physicians\, teachers\, and scientists. Fortunately\, Green-Wood’s extensive records do not indicate any such thievery on our grounds\, but other New York City burial sites were not so lucky!  \n\n\n\nLast time around we covered body snatching for medical schools. This time\, we’ll explore the pseudoscience of phrenology and the skull snatching frenzy that followed. Discover which Green-Wood resident loved to have their head read\, who liked to steal heads\, and the one who almost lost his.  \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! SUMMARY:Building the Brooklyn Bridge: In 3D!
DESCRIPTION:With Author/Historian Jeff Richman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s a New York City icon like you’ve never seen it before! Jeff Richman\, Green-Wood’s historian  and author of the newly released book Building the Brooklyn Bridge 1869-1883: An Illustrated History with Images in 3D\, will take you on a virtual journey through how the Brooklyn Bridge came to be.  \n\n\n\nBuilt during an age of technological innovation\, the awe-inspiring structure connected for—the first time—the then independent cities of Brooklyn and New York. It was not only a modern engineering feat of extraordinary imagination\, fortitude\, and skill\, but a towering beacon of human triumph. Richman will share superb nineteenth-century images from his book\, many never before published\, to illustrate  how a small group of dedicated engineers and thousands of workers toiled for more than a decade to construct what was then the largest suspension bridge ever built.  And grab those 3D glasses (we’ll mail them to you!) to see the images come to life before you. You won’t want to miss this deep dive into what was once proclaimed the “eighth wonder of the world.” \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeffrey I. Richman has been Green-Wood’s historian for over two decades\, but his fascination with New York City history has been lifelong. An avid collector\, many images in this presentation come from his own collection and that which he helped Green-Wood to amass. One of his fondest memories is of attending the one-hundredth anniversary of the bridge’s opening in 1983—just one milestone in his love affair with the Brooklyn Bridge. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Everyone who signs up for this program by the end of day on Wednesday\, December 1st will be mailed a pair of 3D glasses. Tickets purchased after this date will not be mailed a pair of glasses. You will need these glasses to properly experience the program. SUMMARY:Through the Eyes of Currier & Ives
DESCRIPTION:Charles Parsons for Currier & Ives\, Central-Park\, Winter: The Skating Pond\, 1862. Lithograph. Joslyn Art Museum\, Gift of Conagra Brands\, 2016.20.397\n\n\n\n“It’ll nearly be like a picture print from Currier & Ives… these wonderful things are the things we’ll remember all through our lives.” – Classic holiday song\, “Sleigh Ride” \n\n\n\nCurrier & Ives—two names that instantly evoke romantic images of nineteenth-century American Life. A winter sleigh barreling through the snow. A horse-drawn carriage rounding a tree-lined road. Well-dressed socialites strolling through Central Park. The Impact of this publishing powerhouse on visual culture in the US is immeasurable. In fact\, both Nathanial Currier and James Merritt Ives found their final resting place somewhere as idyllic as any of their massively popular lithographs—Green-Wood! \n\n\n\nGreen-Wood invites you to a virtual presentation on the lithographs of Currier & Ives\, exploring the insight and influence they had on nineteenth-century American life. Green-Wood Historian\, Jeff Richman will be joined by Amy Kurtz Lansing\, curator at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme\, Connecticut\, for a virtual tour of the current exhibition Revisiting America: The Prints of Currier & Ives. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSharing a selection from the 65 prints on view at the museum\, Lansing will give you a glimpse into “the Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints” from the cozy comfort of your own home. From its founding in 1857 through its closure in 1907\, Currier & Ives produced thousands of original lithographs that hung in even more businesses and homes across the US. And they employed some of their time’s most talented artists: Louis Maurer\, Frances Palmer\, Charles Parsons\, Napoleon Sarony\, and Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (a number of whom also now reside at Green-Wood!) \n\n\n\nRevisiting America: The Prints of Currier & Ives is on display at the Florence Griswold Museum through January 23\, 2022. Organized by the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha\, Nebraska\, the exhibition draws from the museum’s extensive collection of nearly six hundred Currier & Ives prints. Click here to explore the exhibition.  \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Death Cafe on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Javier Parra\n\n\n\nThe Death Cafe is a simple concept: bring strangers together to discuss one of the great universal truths\, death. With thousands of chapters in over 25 countries around the world\, Death Cafes are informal gatherings whose main objective is to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” There is no set agenda\, but small group conversations might include thoughts on burial versus cremation\, what music you want played at your funeral\, or how death is depicted on television and in film. \n\n\n\nJoin Gabrielle Gatto\, Green-Wood’s Coordinator of Public Programs who holds a certificate in Thanatology\, as she invites participants to share their thoughts\, anxieties\, hopes\, and questions about death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges over Zoom. In person Death Cafes return in spring 2022!  \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: A Grave Concern Part 3
Fortunately\, Green-Wood’s extensive records do not indicate any such thievery on our grounds\, but other burial sites were not so lucky!  \n\n\n\nWe’ve covered body snatching for medical schools and the pseudoscience of phrenology and the skull snatching frenzy that followed. This time around\, we’re digging even deeper—delving into body snatching for ransom\, fandom\, and politics. \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! Bring your own beverage–why not try our recommended cocktail of the evening–and raise a glass to the past as we stay connected through our popular series\, History Happy Hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link and recipe will be emailed the day before the program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code.
