SUMMARY:Mortality & Me: Green-Wood’s Book Club
DESCRIPTION:It can be difficult to engage in conversations about death: Will I say the wrong thing? Am I going to offend someone? Who wants to discuss that morbid stuff anyway? Green-Wood’s book club\, Mortality & Me\, will help make death\, dying\, and end-of-life matters an easier subject to talk about through compelling books that tackle these topics head on.  \n\n\n\nFor this book club session\, we’re joined by author Leila Taylor for a discussion on her 2019 book Darkly: Black History and America’s Gothic Soul. Described as“a fascinating journey into the dark heart of the American gothic\,” Darkly analyzes the relationship between the “gothic” and race in American culture. The evening will begin with a conversation between Taylor and our moderator\, Josie Wells\, before opening discussion up to the group. \n\n\n\nAnd don’t worry—you don’t need to read the book in its entirety (though we recommend you do!) Three designated sections\, which will provide the basis of our conversation\, will be emailed to you in advance.  \n\n\n\nMortality & Me’s moderator\, Josie Wells\, is the creator and facilitator of Footnotes & Indexes Book Club whose mission is to connect people to literature that feeds their curiosity and articulates their lived experiences as a form of community activism. She holds degrees in African American Studies and English from Rutgers University and is an award-winning journalist. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. Please consider a suggested donation of $10 to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets

SUMMARY:Death Cafe on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:The Death Cafe is a simple concept: bring strangers together to discuss one of the great universal truths\, death. With thousands of chapters in over 25 countries around the world\, Death Cafes are informal gatherings that aim to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” There is no set agenda\, but small group conversations might include thoughts on burial versus cremation\, what music you want played at your funeral\, or how death is depicted on television and in film. \n\n\n\nJoin Gabrielle Gatto\, Green-Wood’s Coordinator of Public Programs who holds a certificate in Thanatology\, as she invites participants to share their thoughts\, anxieties\, hopes\, and questions about death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges over Zoom. In-person Death Cafes return in May!  \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Please consider a $10 donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:U'ncuontru
DESCRIPTION:A film by Adrian Paci\n\n\n\n\n\nOn loop in the Historic Chapel April 1st–April 17th\, 10am–5pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdrian Paci’s U’ncuontru (2021) was inspired by the religious ritual of the ‘Madonna vasa vasa’\, which takes place every year on Easter Sunday in the Sicilian town of Modica and is attended by thousands of onlookers. After a long procession\, the statues of the risen Christ and of the Virgin Mary come together at midday where the traditional “vasata” (“kissing”) takes place\, a jubilant reuniting of mother and son.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree and open to the public \n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2021\, due to the pandemic\, the procession could not take place\, but Paci imagined a nocturnal and clandestine meeting taking place regardless of the restrictions. A meeting far from the daylight and lacking the enthusiastic participation of the crowd. A silent and intimate encounter between a mother and son—between a woman veiled in black who removes her cloak and embraces the risen Christ—despite the absence of applause\, revelry\, and music.  \n\n\n\nFrom April 1st through May 7th\, Paci’s solo exhibition\, The Wanderers\, will be on display at kaufmann repetto (55 Walker Street in Manhattan). The artist will be present for an opening reception on Friday\, April 1st\, 6–8pm.  \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist will be made available to all attendees\, or you can print it in advance here. \n\n\n\nAnd depending when you stop by\, you may see a variety of different species passing through: \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, and $15 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEarly Spring Migration (April)\n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration (May to mid-June)\n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding (Late June to August)\n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing Your Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\nDue to COVID-19\, this tour may be canceled. After a long procession\, the statues of the risen Christ and of the Virgin Mary come together at midday where the traditional “vasata” (“kissing”) takes place\, a jubilant reuniting of mother and son.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, but reservations are necessary \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Person Event(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2021\, due to the pandemic\, the procession could not take place\, but Paci imagined a nocturnal and clandestine meeting taking place regardless of the restrictions. A meeting far from the daylight and lacking the enthusiastic participation of the crowd. A silent and intimate encounter between a mother and son—between a woman veiled in black who removes her cloak and embraces the risen Christ—despite the absence of applause\, revelry\, and music.  \n\n\n\nThe Artist’s Talk will take place in the Historic Chapel\, not far from the Main Entrance Arch. There will be opportunities to view the film after the discussion.  \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served. Seating is limited and available on a first come\, first served basis \n\n\n\nFree\, but reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.
