SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Credit: Evan Rabeck\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the birds that make Green-Wood their home—at least temporarily. By September\, offspring of these nesting birds will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. Large numbers of blackbirds\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, vireos\, and swallows will also be passing through. By October\, waterfowl are returning\, and we’ll look for raptors heading south. November will bring back our overwintering feathered denizens from the north. \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. SUMMARY:After the End
DESCRIPTION:A Ritual ABOUT LOSS by Candy Chang and James A. Reeves\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSEPTEMBER 15TH-DECEMBER 6TH\, 10AM-4:30PMHistoric ChapelFree\n\n\n\nDescribe your loss. This simple prompt will be asked of each visitor to After the End\, a new site-specific installation in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. Influenced in equal parts by religious ceremonies and science fiction\, artists Candy Chang and James A. Reeves have created a public ritual to contemplate loss in all forms: the loss of loved ones\, relationships\, health\, and worlds we once knew—as well as the practices that have helped us endure. Visitors are invited to share their experience on a scroll and place it upon an illuminated altar. Lit from within\, each response becomes a devotional candle\, and together they form an evolving field of light. Selected reflections will be projected throughout the Chapel\, and visitors can sit in the apse to contemplate the experiences of others as well as their own. After the End offers a modern refuge that reminds us we are not alone as we mourn the end of one reality and enter the next. \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, Chang and Reeves have collaborated on public rituals to contemplate the human condition. Their installations have been exhibited at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City\, the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles\, and the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia. Inspired by the devotional practices of religion\, the ancient I Ching\, and cyberpunk visions\, Chang and Reeves create public works that facilitate conversations about reckoning with an increasingly alienating world. To learn more\, visit ritualfields.com. \n\n\n\nAfter the End was made possible by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nDue to the overwhelming popular response to After the End\, the installation has now been extended through December 6th! \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Latent Teloneum
DESCRIPTION:Heidi Lau and Nikholis Planck\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 23rd-DECEMBER 5TH\, 11:00AM-4:00PMFort Hamilton Gatehouse AtticFree\n\n\n\nSince January 2021\, Heidi Lau\, Green-Wood’s artist in residence\, has been creating ceramic sculptures in a studio space on the first floor of the Fort Hamilton Gatehouse. Just above her a large attic sat relatively quiet except for spiders busily weaving their webs. Nearing the end of her residency\, Lau has invited Nikholis Planck for a two-person exhibition in the attic\, which has been unlocked for the public’s viewing. All of the works on view\, like the spiders’ webs\, are suspended from the roof’s wooden support beams. The title\, chosen by the artists\, refers to the hidden costs of the creative process (teloneum is a Medieval word for a tax on the sale of goods). \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public\, no reservations are necessary. Please consider a donation to The Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nAttendees are asked to use caution when going up and down the stairs. Please do not touch any of the work on view.  \n\n\n\nThe Fort Hamilton Gatehouse is located near the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and Miceli Place.

SUMMARY:Violet Oakley: Painting the Way
DESCRIPTION:With over 575\,000 permanent residents\, there’s no shortage of incredible stories at Green-Wood—and Violet Oakley’s does not disappoint! Defying all societal expectations in the early twentieth century\, Oakley became the first American woman to land a public mural commission—for the Pennsylvania State capitol—at only 28 years old\, which was unheard of in a male dominated field. Oakley was one of  the “Red Rose Girls\,” a trio of artists who lived and worked together in a communal art gallery—something that pushed against the gender roles of their time. Today\, she is regarded as an early member of the LGBTQ+ community\, having lived with her partner Edith Emerson for over 45 years. We’ll be joined virtually by Dr. Bailey Van Hook\, Violet Oakley expert and professor emerita of art history at Virginia Tech\, for a lively discussion with Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman about the artist’s fascinating life. \n\n\n\nOver the course of Dr. Van Hook’s career as a writer\, professor\, and historian\, she has shed light on women as both creators and subjects in American art. She is the author of Violet Oakley: An Artist’s Life\, the first biography of the groundbreaking artist and the result of 15 years of research and extensive travels in pursuits to capture the full story of Oakley. \n\n\n\nJeffrey I. Richman has been Green-Wood’s historian for over two decades\, having led tours for nearly a decade prior. He is the ultimate expert of all things Green-Wood. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members.

SUMMARY:Crematory Tour with Reimagine
DESCRIPTION:Tour the Crematory at Green-Wood after an in-depth look at the history of cremation. \n\n\n\nThis fascinating review of cremation’s history and its impact on the future of the funeral will take us from mankind’s earliest known cremation in Australia 32 thousand years ago\, to pagan cremations in ancient Rome\, to a discussion of how Judaism’s consistent objection to cremation led to 1\,500 years of burial (Christians have long felt that you have to have a physical body to be resurrected\, but all that is changing now). Joan of Arc\, Walt Whitman\, Madame Helena Blavatsky\, Mahatma Gandhi\, Jessica Mitford\, Ann Landers and Whitney Houston will all make brief cameo appearances in this engaging\, lively talk. Cremation today accounts for a majority of American funerals\, but will and should that trend continue unabated? \n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, registration is required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuide and funeral director Amy Cunningham will review how the coronavirus crisis revealed the need for deeper thinking on simple\, earth-friendly modes of disposition. After a safe and socially distanced glance at the faces of the crematory retorts with Gabrielle Gatto in Green-Wood’s state-of-the-art facility\, you’ll have sound knowledge on how to develop your own end-of-life plan in a way that conforms to your values. Who knew that woven into cremation’s story were so many hotly contested views on how to face death\, and so much passion regarding what’s really right for the earth and all of civilization?

SUMMARY:Death Cafe: After the End Edition
DESCRIPTION:“The moon is a stone and the sky is full of deadly hardware\, but oh God\, how beautiful anyway.” —Margaret Atwood \n\n\n\nIn this special edition Death Cafe\, we will be joined by artists Candy Chang and James Reeves\, whose newest collaboration\, After the End\, is currently on view in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. Candy and James will open the discussion with  their insights on grieving and ritual in the twenty-first century\, touching on the ways in which science fiction speaks to mortality. We will gather at the Historic Chapel to immerse ourselves in After the End\, a stunning public ritual about loss and grief\, then transition to the Modern Chapel for discussion. \n\n\n\nThe Death Cafe is a simple concept. It was inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or cafe) where people gathered informally to discuss ideas. Death Cafes apply this concept to the most universal topic of all\, death\, creating an opportunity for all of us to share our thoughts and feelings on this difficult topic. \n\n\n\nLocation: Check-in takes place at the Main Entrance Arch at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue. During the first half hour you are invited to explore the installation in the Historic Chapel before moving to the Modern Chapel for the remainder of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Silent Cities—Designing the Urban Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Why do cemeteries across America (and even around the world) seem to all look eerily similar? Join us as we journey through the history of US cemeteries\, exploring how they came to be what they are. From the winding roads and extravagant landscaping to the almost cookie-cutter design of gravestones and mausoleums\, there’s a reason behind the design of these silent cities. We’ll begin in the eighteenth century uncovering why cemeteries have been modeled after gardens\, and how that enhances the visitor’s experience. Then we’ll fast forward to the nineteenth century to discuss the rise of the Rural Cemetery Movement and how it gave way to iconic monuments and memorials that are now synonymous with sites like Green-Wood. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link and recipe will be emailed the day before the program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. SUMMARY:Buried Alive: Preventing Grave Errors
DESCRIPTION:Fear of being buried alive has haunted humanity for much of history. The possibility that we could be interred prematurely and slowly wither away\, fully conscious and underground\, has been the cause for many horror stories and nightmares. Although medicine would eventually provide the critical knowledge to determine if someone had actually died\, innovative and creative burial solutions were designed during the nineteenth-century to prevent this grave misfortune. In this virtual talk\, archivist and death scholar Kelly Christian explores safety coffins\, underground morse code contraptions\, and other inventive solutions to prevent you from waking up six feet under. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree.
