SUMMARY:Birding in Peace (Sold Out)
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\nThis tour date is currently sold out. Click the button below to get tickets to another Birding in Peace date\, or purchase tickets to other walking tours by going back to our calendar here. \n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly-Spring Migration \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Pages from the Past: NYC’s Greatest Diarist Dishes\, Part 2
DESCRIPTION:There’s always time for a little more gossip\, right? And no one could dish it like George Templeton Strong. Once a well-connected lawyer and a trustee of both Trinity Church and Columbia College (but also a man who reflected the racial\, ethnic\, and religious prejudices of his time)\, he is now perhaps best known for the extensive private diary (never actually intended for publication) that he kept from 1835 until his death in 1875. Strong’s writings detail his frank observations of high society and the people of NYC who he knew intimately (many of whom wound up at Green-Wood)\, as well as his visits to the Cemetery. Matt Dellinger\, writer and student of history\, will join Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman again to discuss Strong’s candid observations and dive deep into his unique insider’s view of history. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatt Dellinger has written for The New Yorker\, the Oxford American\, The New York Times\, and The Atlantic\, and has reported on transportation and planning for WNYC. He is the author of Interstate 69: The Unfinished History of the Last Great American Highway and is at work on his second book\, about Brooklyn in the Civil War. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Earth Day Walk
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Earth Day at Green-Wood with an afternoon walking tour led by Sara Evans\, Green-Wood’s manager of horticulture operations\, and learn about the life cycles of some of the tree species that are tracked in the Cemetery’s Phenology Project. Never heard of phenology? It’s the study of the annual life cycle events of all plant and animal species that are usually marked by the changing of the seasons. Tracking these events can not only help us understand the impact the changing climate has on plants and wildlife\, but may also help us to more effectively predict future environmental responses to climate change. In just over an hour\, you will strengthen your observational and identification skills by learning the visible parts of each species\, get familiar with the visual cues of their lifecycles\, and learn how you can contribute to the project! \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are pay-as-you-wish\, though we recommend $10-$15 per person. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith your support\, Green-Wood is able to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nPlease note that tickets are limited to one per transaction due to capacity and must be reserved in advance. Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled. \n\n\n\nMandatory Safety Protocols\n\n\n\n– Attendees must wear a face covering at all times and maintain at least a 6-foot distance from those not in their group. \n\n\n\n– The tour guide will be using a voice amplifier to ensure all social-distancing protocols are adhered to. \n\n\n\n– The walk is over hilly and uneven terrain\, comfortable footwear is encouraged. \n\n\n\n– Follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors. \n\n\n\n– Travel Safely: Green-Wood recommends following all safety precautions while traveling to and from the Cemetery\, whether by foot\, mass transit\, or driving. SUMMARY:Death Cafe: Hot Pot Edition
DESCRIPTION:This special edition of the popular Death Cafe is inspired by Green-Wood’s artist-in-residence Heidi Lau. She will begin the evening discussing her art practice and the importance of hot pots in Chinese culture as an opportunity for nourishment\, conversation\, and reflection. Led by Death Cafe moderator Bethany Tabor\, participants will be encouraged to make their own hot pots (Don’t worry! Lau will send some how-to tips)\, while taking part in intimate group conversations about their thoughts and feelings on death. As always\, the Death Cafe is an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. \n\n\n\nThis program is presented as part of a new Death Education series at Green-Wood\, Death & Us. Death is the great universal\, but the ways in which the dead are grieved and memorialized vary across racial\, cultural\, and economic divides in the United States. This series brings together a myriad of voices—from historians and preservationists to activists and funeral practitioners—to explore how diverse communities mourn and commemorate the departed from our nation’s founding to today. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, suggested donation $10. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. Your donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought provoking programs in death education at little or no cost to you. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite

He carried $3\,000 hidden on his body and a list containing the names of 200 luminaries in the fields of art\, science\, literature\, and medicine who were trapped in Nazi-occupied France and in danger of being slaughtered. By the time he safely returned to New York a year later\, he had saved 2\,000 souls—including cultural giants Hannah Arendt\, Marc Chagall\, Anna Mahler\, Max Ernst\, and Marcel Duchamp. After the war\, Fry became the first American to be honored as a “Righteous Among Nations” by Israel’s Yad Vashem for risking his life to save Jews during the Holocaust. Join Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman and Director of Programming Harry Weil\, who has a PhD in modern and contemporary art history\, for a conversation about this permanent resident of Green-Wood and the art that would not exist without his heroism.  \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Mortality & Me: Green-Wood’s Book Club
DESCRIPTION:It can be difficult to engage in conversations about death: Will I say the wrong thing? Am I going to offend someone? Who wants to discuss that morbid stuff anyway? Green-Wood’s book club\, Mortality & Me\, will help make death\, dying\, and end-of-life matters an easier subject to talk about through compelling books that tackle these topics head on.  \n\n\n\nFor this book club session\, we will be discussing The Good Death by Ann Neumann. Following the death of her father\, Neumann\, a journalist and hospice volunteer set out to examine what it means to die well in the United States. And don’t worry—You don’t need to read the book in its entirety. Three designated sections\, which will be the basis of our conversation\, will be emailed in advance. Mortality & Me’s moderator\, Josie Wells\, is the creator and facilitator of Footnotes & Indexes Book Club whose mission is to connect people to literature that feeds their curiosity and articulates their lived experiences as a form of community activism. She holds degrees in African American Studies and English from Rutgers University and is an award-winning journalist. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, suggested donation $10. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYour donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought provoking programs in death education at little or no cost to you. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain.
