SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly-Spring Migration \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code.
SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Hidden Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood isn’t wanting for extraordinary and monumental tombs\, but many of its most remarkable residents lay buried under unmarked\, modest\, or sunken stones. It’s no wonder that visitors spend so much time looking for graves that are often easy to miss! You’ll learn about some of Green-Wood’s lesser-known—but equally fascinating—monuments across our 478 acres. Highlights will include suffragist Elizabeth Tilton\, whose stone is marked simply as “Grandmother;” Robert “Little Dougie” Spedden\, a child survivor of the Titanic; and teenage military cadet Andrew Culver Jr.\, whose marble gravestone is one of the Cemetery’s most underrated gems. \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! Bring your own beverage–why not try our recommended cocktail of the evening–and raise a glass to the past as we stay connected through our latest series\, History Happy Hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link and recipe will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:We Remember: A Community COVID Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Naming the Lost Memorials and The Green-Wood Cemetery\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince May 2020\, Naming the Lost Memorials\, a small team of volunteer artists\, activists\, and folklorists\, has been creating memorial sites in New York City to name and remember victims of the COVID-19 pandemic. The memorials consist of tens of thousands of nameplates with personalized drawings and photos. Collectively they create an overwhelming visual representation of the enormity of the loss. On June 8th\, they will unveil We Remember: A Community Covid Memorial near Green-Wood’s Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street. \n\n\n\nDuring this special ceremony\, We Remember will be dedicated and activated by artists\, religious leaders\, and performers. We invite you to participate through song\, movement\, invocation\, prayer\, and a simple candle ritual allowing us to call out the names of the dead. \n\n\n\nNOTE: Activities and dedication moved to the Historic Chapel due to rain. \n\n\n\n\n\nNaming The Lost Memorials Installation in Brooklyn.
