SUMMARY:Pouring Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION: \nWhen Joy Doumis and Jeremy Hammond approached Green-Wood in fall 2015 to ask if they could harvest the apples here\, of course we had to know why. To make hard cider of course! Spread across 478 acres\, our urban orchard has over 150 Malus (aka apple) trees! Using giant tarps to gather apples varieties that include Baldwin\, Granny Smith\, various crab apples\, and a yet-to-be-identified apple variety\, they set about turning their harvest into a delicious fermentation of homemade hard cider. In keeping with the sustainable farming movement and a love for all things Green-Wood\, join Joy and Jeremy for the story of how they produced over 100 bottles of hard cider (which they call Proper Cider) in their own back yard literally. Naturally\, a tasting of the final product is included. \n \n$25 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $30 for nonmembers. \n \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \nBirds of Late-Winter & Early Migrants\nSunday\, March 12 & 26 at 7:00 AM\nWith the beginning of longer days\, we’ll track many of the nearly 40 overwintering bird species at Green-Wood. Be on the lookout for arriving Common Grackles\, nest building Red-tailed Hawks\, visiting American Woodcocks\, several species of waterfowl\, and the first appearances of Eastern Phoebes (a harbinger of the spring songbird migration). \nBirds of Early-Spring Migration\nSunday\, April 9\, 16\, 23\, & 30 at 6:30 AM\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nSunday\, May 7\, 14\, 21\, & 28 and Saturday\, May 6 & 20 at 6:00 AM\nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n$10 for members of Green‑Wood and BHS/$15 for non-members. \nFor this program you will check in at the Gothic Arches\, right at the main entrance. Join today. \n \nBiologist and ecologist Mike McGraw will lead visitors in an afterhours exploration of Green-Wood’s nocturnal animals.  As part of a multi-year survey\, Mike will set up bait stations and light lures to attract moths\, butterflies\, and various winged invertebrates for documentation. Territorial owls and breeding frogs will also be potentially active during this event\, so be ready to listen for and learn more about Green-Wood’s unique ecology. Mike will answer any and all you have while discussing his findings.  \n \nBring lawn chairs or blankets to observe these nocturnal animals as they appear from and disappear into the night. Our afternoon starts with a visit to the graves of those who built\, worked\, and served at the Army Terminal\, as well as other important figures in the development of Brooklyn’s military and industrial waterfront over the past century. Then we head to the Army Terminal\, designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert and completed in 1919\, to discover its past as an important transportation and logistics hub through World War II until the mid-1960’s and its future as home to over 100 companies in a wide range of industries. This tour last 2.5 hours\, and it does require some walking and climbing stairs. It was inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café) where people gathered informally to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. DESCRIPTION: \n \n \nAs home to over 7\,000 trees\, Green-Wood’s collection of maples\, oaks\, beeches\, and gingkoes is one of the best in New York City. But how can you possibly tell them apart? Arborist Bill Logan leads an intensive five hour workshop that begins with a close study of an array of twigs and leaves\, and learning how to classify those using dichotomous keys.  \n \nAfterward\, tour Green-Wood’s extensive grounds to practice ways of recognizing and distinguishing tree features. You’ll learn helpful tools in identification and easy-to-remember mnemonic aids. This workshop is an enjoyable way to spend a spring afternoon\, and you’ll pick up factoids to impress friends on your next outdoor adventure! Visitors are invited to transcribe their most intimate secrets onto paper and lay them to rest in a grave designed by the artist. The installation will debut on April 29th & 30th from 12:00 – 5:00 PM\, and Calle will be present to privately receive some visitors’ secrets. \nDuring the debut weekend\, visitors are encouraged to spend the day exploring the sculptures and monuments throughout Green-Wood\, a tradition that dates back to the early 1800s. Free maps of the cemetery\, specially made to accompany Calle’s installation\, will be available. Also guided walking tours\, with an emphasis on symbols and iconography\, will be offered at no cost. Following the inaugural performance weekend\, visitors can see Calle’s installation during regular cemetery hours and independently deposit secrets into the gravestone. \nCalle has pledged to return periodically over the next 25 years to exhume and cremate the written confessions in a ceremonial bonfire service and moment of remembrance. \nDuring the debut\, for best access to the installation\, visitors should come through Green-Wood’s main gates at 5th Avenue and 25th Street\, where a welcome table will be staged by the gothic archway. DESCRIPTION: \nGreen-Wood is teaming with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the past and present of distilling\, Brooklyn style. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s permanent residents with whiskey connections\, including the only casualty in the contentious Whiskey Wars of the mid-1800s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard to explore how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four of their of their delectable products (which they have been producing since 2010). \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the distillery. \n \nLimited to 30 persons. This event is strictly 21+; I.D. required. Our trolley tour pays homage to the many laid to rest at Green-Wood who served in this war intended to end all wars. We will visit the graves of wealthy heiresses Dorothy and Gladys Cromwell whose dramatic double suicide captured the attention of the nation; reconnaissance pilot Lieutenant Kenneth Culbert shot down over enemy lines; and ace bomber pilot First Lieutenant John Cowperthwaite Tyler\, amongst others. Along the way\, we will read from letters these men and women detailing their heroic exploits\, as well as discuss how our dedicated team of volunteers have identified these individuals and where they are interred. \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for nonmembers. \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. Her new book\, Gardens of Stone\, explores how memorials and monuments help to tell the tale of New York City\, from its humble beginnings to its emergence as a world capital. She will be joined by John Rousmaniere\, who has compiled an illustrated history of Evergreens Cemetery (which straddles Brooklyn and Queens)\, titled Green Oasis in Brooklyn\, and Richard L.
