SUMMARY:Birding in Peace (Sold Out)
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\nThis tour date is currently sold out. Click the button below to get tickets to another Birding in Peace date\, or purchase tickets to other walking tours by going back to our calendar here. \n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly-Spring Migration \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Varian Fry: Saving Europe’s Greatest Treasures
DESCRIPTION:In August 1940\, journalist Varian Fry set out on a dangerous mission—one of the least known\, but most heroic acts of the twentieth century. With the backing of the Emergency Rescue Committee\, Fry flew to Marseilles to rescue some of the world’s most famous artists. He carried $3\,000 hidden on his body and a list containing the names of 200 luminaries in the fields of art\, science\, literature\, and medicine who were trapped in Nazi-occupied France and in danger of being slaughtered. By the time he safely returned to New York a year later\, he had saved 2\,000 souls—including cultural giants Hannah Arendt\, Marc Chagall\, Anna Mahler\, Max Ernst\, and Marcel Duchamp. After the war\, Fry became the first American to be honored as a “Righteous Among Nations” by Israel’s Yad Vashem for risking his life to save Jews during the Holocaust. Join Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman and Director of Programming Harry Weil\, who has a PhD in modern and contemporary art history\, for a conversation about this permanent resident of Green-Wood and the art that would not exist without his heroism.  \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Mortality & Me: Green-Wood’s Book Club
DESCRIPTION:It can be difficult to engage in conversations about death: Will I say the wrong thing? Am I going to offend someone? Who wants to discuss that morbid stuff anyway? Green-Wood’s book club\, Mortality & Me\, will help make death\, dying\, and end-of-life matters an easier subject to talk about through compelling books that tackle these topics head on.  \n\n\n\nFor this book club session\, we will be discussing The Good Death by Ann Neumann. Following the death of her father\, Neumann\, a journalist and hospice volunteer set out to examine what it means to die well in the United States. And don’t worry—You don’t need to read the book in its entirety. Three designated sections\, which will be the basis of our conversation\, will be emailed in advance. Mortality & Me’s moderator\, Josie Wells\, is the creator and facilitator of Footnotes & Indexes Book Club whose mission is to connect people to literature that feeds their curiosity and articulates their lived experiences as a form of community activism. She holds degrees in African American Studies and English from Rutgers University and is an award-winning journalist. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, suggested donation $10. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYour donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought provoking programs in death education at little or no cost to you. SUMMARY:Decolonizing Death Studies
DESCRIPTION:Gerard Fortune\, Gede (Ghede\, Guede)\n\n\n\nFor those not readily familiar\, Death Studies (or Death Education) can be defined as the interdisciplinary study of death\, dying\, burial\, and last-rites rituals. In all its variations\, it reflects the life of societies—their political systems\, social customs\, norms\, values\, and religious beliefs. This evening’s presentation\, led by Dr. Kami Fletcher\, focuses on how systems of power and privilege were passed through deathways (ways of dying which can also include burial practices\, funerals\, mourning\, and body care)\, either by force\, coercion\, or assimilation. She will highlight why it is imperative to recognize how European colonialism has marginalized\, trivialized\, and outright negated the deathways and death practices of nations\, cultures\, and persons deemed ‘other’. \n\n\n\nDr. Fletcher is an Associate professor of American & African American History at Albright College. She recently served as editor and contributor to Till Death Do Us Part: American Ethnic Cemeteries as Borders Uncrossed. She is currently co-authoring First 100 Years of Black Undertaking in Baltimore and co-editing Southern Cemeteries\, Imprints of Southern Culture. Dr. Fletcher serves as the president for The Collective for Radical Death Studies.  \n\n\n\nThis program is presented as part of a new Death Education series at Green-Wood\, Death & Us. Death is the great universal\, but the ways in which the dead are grieved and memorialized vary across racial\, cultural\, and economic divides in the United States. This series brings together a myriad of voices—from historians and preservationists to activists and funeral practitioners—to explore how diverse communities mourn and commemorate the departed from our nation’s founding to today. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, suggested donation $10. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. Your donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought provoking programs in death education at little or no cost to you. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite
