The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Join today. \n \nNew York Times bestselling author Malachy McCourt joins us for a very special literary evening to discuss his new work Death Need Not be Fatal\, a personal memoir that shows readers how to live life to its fullest\, how to grow old without acting old\, and how to die without regret. McCourt recounts the tragedies that have shaped his life: the deaths of his sister and twin brothers; the real story behind Angela’s famous ashes; and a poignant account of the death of the man who left his mother\, brothers\, and him to nearly die in squalor. Yet\, he finds humor in all that life has thrown him so as to look at the prospect of his own demise with emotional clarity and insight. McCourt will be introduced by the book’s co-author Brian McDonald. \n \nMcCourt was born in Brooklyn\, New York in 1931\, but grew up in Limerick\, Ireland. He returned to the United States at the age of 20 where he says he “did a bit of dishwashing\, long-shoring\, military service\, bartending\, stage acting\, and saloon owning.” His illustrative career also included stints as a political activist and a 2006 candidate for governor of the state of New York. In 2016\, McCourt was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Irish-American Writers. \n \nThis book talk is a Brooklyn Book Festival Bookend event. \n \nFree to attend\, reservations required. \n

Join today. \nVarian Fry: Commemoration & Symposium \nHonoring the 32 Year-Old New Yorker Who Saved Marc Chagall\, Max Ernst\, Hannah Arendt and Two Thousand Others from the Nazis \nWith $3\,000 hidden on his body and the backing of the Emergency Rescue Committee\, Varian Fry flew from New York to Marseilles in August\, 1940\, to begin one of the least known\, but most heroic actions of the twentieth century. Carrying a list of 200 luminaries in the fields of art\, science\, literature and medicine\, Fry began his dangerous rescue of some of the world’s most famous artists who were then trapped in Nazi-occupied France. By the time he returned to New York a little over a year later\, Fry had saved 2\,000 souls\, some famous\, some unknown.  \nGreen-Wood is proud to join with renowned authors\, art historians and experts in the field of humanitarian aid to commemorate Varian Fry and his legacy. What can we learn today from his selfless acts of courage? What do his deeds teach us about being human in this world? Varian Fry was the first American to be designated “Righteous Among Nations” by Israel’s Yad Vashem for risking his life to aid Jews during the Holocaust. SUMMARY:Battle of Brooklyn: Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Brooklyn\, fought in 1776 on land that is now a part of Green-Wood\, was the first battle of the American Revolution to be waged after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Green-Wood hosts a morning of commemoration to honor all those who served to defend the young Republic. See parades\, cannon fire\, horses\, and re-enactments. This is a great event for kids and families! \n10:00 AM – TROLLEY TOUR (Sold Out): This is a separate\, ticketed tour\, not included in general registration for the Commemoration events. \n11:00 AM – LIFE ON THE BATTLEFIELD: Meet soldiers\, their horses\, and famous colonial Americans. Historic re-enactors will demonstrate revolutionary weapons and tactics.  \n12:30 PM – BATTLE OF BROOKLYN PARADE: Grab a Revolutionary regiment flag\, wave it high\, and march to Battle Hill with The Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. There will be dance demonstrations\, festive music\, 18th-century food to sample\, and storytelling about battles won and lost amidst the glow of a campfire. Locally nesting birds will be incubating eggs or actively raising their first broods. \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nSunday\, May 7\, 14\, 21\, & 28 and Saturday\, May 6 & 20 at 6:00 AM\nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \nSummer Birding Sundays\nJune & July from 6-7:30am (except July 2nd)\,\nAugust 6th & 20th from 6:30-8am\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. DESCRIPTION:What can we learn from Buddhist teachings about our own lives on earth? How might we understand the impermanence of life within the expanding universe? In what ways might death inform our relationships with strangers\, loved ones\, and our own selves? These questions are the inspiration for a new series of lectures and meditations presented by the Brooklyn Zen Center (BZC) and Green-Wood that explore the complexities of death\, dying\, and the hereafter. \nLed by teachers from the BZC\, each session will begin with an insightful discussion that highlights Buddhist teachings on life and death. Afterward\, just around sunset\, attendees will gather for meditation within the cemetery’s tranquil and historic landscape. Whether you’re a practicing Buddhist or just someone looking to gain a little peace of mind\, each session will offer thoughtful opportunities for reflection in the company of fellow seekers. \nIf you are unable to sit on the ground\, you are strongly encouraged to bring a folding chair or cushion.
