SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Courtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or to print here. \n\n\n\nPlease note: All walking tours traverse hilly and at times uneven terrain. Comfortable footwear is suggested.  \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. There are no paper or e-tickets. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly-Spring Migration \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Hidden Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood isn’t wanting for extraordinary and monumental tombs\, but many of its most remarkable residents lay buried under unmarked\, modest\, or sunken stones. It’s no wonder that visitors spend so much time looking for graves that are often easy to miss! You’ll learn about some of Green-Wood’s lesser-known—but equally fascinating—monuments across our 478 acres. Highlights will include suffragist Elizabeth Tilton\, whose stone is marked simply as “Grandmother;” Robert “Little Dougie” Spedden\, a child survivor of the Titanic; and teenage military cadet Andrew Culver Jr.\, whose marble gravestone is one of the Cemetery’s most underrated gems. \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! Bring your own beverage–why not try our recommended cocktail of the evening–and raise a glass to the past as we stay connected through our latest series\, History Happy Hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Six Degrees of Lincoln: Green-Wood and The Great Emancipator—Part 2
DESCRIPTION:You can hardly walk through Green-Wood without coming upon the grave of someone connected to Abraham Lincoln. There’s the general who led all Union armies from 1862 to 1864\, the telegrapher and companion with whom he awaited news from the battlefield\, and the newspaper publishers who reported on his administration. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The actress who was on stage at Ford’s Theatre when Lincoln was assassinated and the doctor who embalmed his body are also interred at Green-Wood\, among many others. \n\n\n\nFor this evening’s discussion we welcome back Harold Holzer for a discussion of even more Lincoln! He’ll be joined by Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman to discuss Green-Wood’s many connections to the Great Emancipator. \n\n\n\nHarold Holzer\, a prolific scholar and lecturer\, has authored\, coauthored\, and edited fifty-four books including Lincoln and the Power of the Press. He served for six years (2010–2016) as Chairman of The Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation. \n\n\n\nYou need not have attended Part 1 of this program to enjoy Part 2.  \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Striking the Right Chord: Music and Prose for Funerals
DESCRIPTION:Gerard Fortune\, Gede (Ghede\, Guede)\n\n\n\nHow does one begin to find the right words and music for a funeral or memorial event? Many funerals today involve collaborating with clergy\, a secular officiant\, or close family members\, and yet some decisions can still be ours alone. Through cued musical selections\, scripture\, poetry\, and a powerpoint presentation\, we will review basic end-of-life ceremony structure (beginnings\, middles\, and endings). We’ll contemplate ways to support grief at any gathering\, as well as to open the hearts of those present. This program will be led by funeral director Amy Cunningham\, who writes about funeral planning at TheInspiredFuneral.com\, and will share resources with those in attendance that they may print out and save.  \n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, suggested donation $10. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYour donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought provoking programs in death education at little or no cost to you. SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: A Grave Concern—Nineteenth-Century Body Snatching
DESCRIPTION:Once a burial takes place\, it’s all about resting in peace for eternity\, right? That wasn’t always the case! In the nineteenth century\, there was a demand by medical schools for cadavers so doctors and students could study human anatomy. The shockingly profitable “resurrection” business was created by grave robbers to fulfill the needs of medical schools by stealing bodies in the middle of the night. Fortunately\, Green-Wood’s extensive records do not indicate any such thievery on our grounds\, but other New York City burial sites were not so lucky! Join us for a look into the history of grave robbing in New York City and to learn about a few of Green-Wood’s permanent residents who may have dug up a body… or two. SUMMARY:Nineteenth-Century New York in 3D: Part 2
DESCRIPTION:It’s your best opportunity to time travel back in time to the New York City that you were born too late to live in! Over a span of four decades\, Jeff Kraus has put together an extraordinary collection of stereoviews of life in the burgeoning metropolis. In the nineteenth century\, stereoviews were a popular type of photograph\, created using a technique that gave the appearance of three-dimensional images. In this follow-up program\, Jeff Kraus once again joins Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman\, for a lively discussion of some of the most fascinating images of the city that so many of Green-Wood’s permanent residents lived in and knew so well. Sign up early to make sure you get your 3D glasses well before this event. \n\n\n\nYou need not have attended Part 1 of this program to enjoy Part 2.  \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: Everyone who signs up for this program by the end of day on Monday\, June 7th will be mailed a pair of 3D glasses. SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Spring Plant Walk with the Next Epoch Seed Library
DESCRIPTION:Spring is a great time to meet some of the wild\, weedy\, and resilient plants who make their homes in Green-Wood’s urban meadows! Join Ellie Irons and Anne Percoco of the Next Epoch Seed Library for a socially distanced\, multisensorial walking tour focused on spontaneous urban flora. As we find and interact with individual plants\, we’ll consider the role of plant-human reciprocity in ecosystem function\, and how different management strategies impact our plant neighbors and the many other life forms who rely on them. We’ll also make a visit to the Cemetery’s rewilding experiment “Rethinking Urban Grasslands\,” where we’ll meet some of the vegetal collaborators who are helping make it happen. \n\n\n\nLocation: Check-in takes place in the meadow at the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street.
SUMMARY:Graveyards to Green-Wood: The Evolution of NYC’s Burial Grounds
DESCRIPTION:Before Green-Wood was founded in 1838\, churchyards\, potter’s fields\, and other graveyards were the final resting places for New York City’s dead. These early burial sites were a far cry from the romantic pastoral landscapes of the cemeteries that were to come\, during the Rural Cemetery Movement. Nonetheless\, they provide valuable insight into perspectives on death in early New York—telling us not just about the dead\, but the living. Archeologist Dr. Elizabeth D. Meade joins Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman for a lively discussion about the pre-Green-Wood fate of the dead. Dr. Meade\, whose recently published doctoral dissertation\, “‘Prepare for Death and Follow Me:’ An Archaeological Survey of the Historic Period Cemeteries of New York City\,” will share some of her extensive research into the hundreds of burial sites across the city’s deathscape. Her fascinating work can be viewed at www.cemeteriesofnyc.com. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. SUMMARY:Humane Insight: African American Suffering & Death
DESCRIPTION:Gerard Fortune\, Gede (Ghede\, Guede)\n\n\n\nThroughout American history\, images of wounded and dead Black bodies have pervaded the cultural sphere\, including the graphic brutality of the 1834 Lalaurie affair; Emmett Till’s murder and funeral; and the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Questioning the role of the role of the spectator and the victim\, Dr. Courtney R. Baker’s book Humane Insight (2015) explores the uses of Black suffering and death in African American liberation movements. In this presentation\, Dr. Baker will share her discoveries from this research\, highlighting the evolution of African Americans’ relationship to civic policies and the concept of humanity as well as the central role that African American women have played in rendering mourning as a form of activism. \n\n\n\nDr. Baker is a scholar of African American visual culture and liberation\, and is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at University of California  Riverside. You can learn more about her work and current research on her website. \n\n\n\nThis program is presented as part of a new Death Education series at Green-Wood\, Death & Us. Death is the great universal\, but the ways in which the dead are grieved and memorialized vary across racial\, cultural\, and economic divides in the United States. This series brings together a myriad of voices—from historians and preservationists to activists and funeral practitioners—to explore how diverse communities mourn and commemorate the departed from our nation’s founding to today. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree\, suggested donation $10. Please consider a donation to Green-Wood when reserving your ticket. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYour donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide engaging and thought provoking programs in death education at little or no cost to you.
