SUMMARY:Death Café
DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. Tea and light snacks are provided. \n“A place for people to discuss our inevitable fate.” – Gothamist \n“It’s a reversal for American culture\, which for a long time has shied away from these conversations.” – Village Voice \n“[E]ncouraging people to talk about death more freely and naturally.” – Haaretz \nFree to attend\, RSVP recommended. Please register using the Eventbrite box below. \nThis program takes place in our Modern Chapel just to the right after passing through the Gothic Arches at the main entrance. All events will take place rain or shine. Click here for our inclement weather policy. \n \nMobile users: Please tap here for free registration.\n

SUMMARY:Become a Citizen Pruner
DESCRIPTION:Stewardship and pruning hugely reduce a tree’s vulnerability to common urban threats such as pedestrian and vehicular traffic\, drought and storms. In New York City\, where there is limited funding for tree maintenance but significant need\, Citizen Pruners provides a great asset to our urban environment. Join fellow nature lovers and urbanists to become licensed to take care of NYC’s street trees. \nThe 12-hour Citizen Pruner Course consists of 5 sessions – 4 in the classroom and 1 field outing. \nPrice: $100\, or $15 for residents of Sunset Park (zip codes 11232 and 11220) \nVisit TreesNY website\, www.treesny.org\, for more information and to reserve your space. \nGIVE TREES A CHANCE\nEnvironmental Justice in South Brooklyn\n \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet\, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. TreesNY works with both youth and adult volunteers and works throughout the five boroughs of New York City. \nFunding for this project is provided by the NYS Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the Environmental Justice Community Impact Grant Program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

SUMMARY:Black in Nineteenth-Century Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:In 1838\, just eleven years after New York State abolished slavery\, a free Black man named James Weeks made his first purchase of land in Brooklyn. In the same year\, Green-Wood Cemetery was established as one of the first rural cemeteries in the United States. \nThis tour begins with a survey of the many prominent Black New Yorkers and abolitionists laid to rest at the Cemetery\, including Margaret Pine (1778–1857)\, the last woman to have lived as a slave in New York\, Susan Smith McKinney Steward (1847–1918)\, whose family owned land in Weeksville and who became first black female doctor in the state\, and the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1959–1988)\, among many others. Then we head to Weeksville Heritage Center in Crown Heights to learn about its history (one of America’s largest free Black communities prior to the Civil War) through the stories of its residents. \n \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $40 for non-members \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. In order to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device on the trolley\, advance arrangements must be made. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1. SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION: \n \n \n \n \nBefore our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the birds that make Green-Wood their home – at least temporarily. By September\, offspring of these nesting birds will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. Large numbers of blackbirds\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, vireos\, and swallows will also be passing through. By October\, waterfowl are returning\, and we’ll look for raptors heading south. November will bring back our overwintering feathered denizens from the north. \n \n$10 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $15 for non-members \n \nFor this program you will check in at the Gothic Arches\, right at the main entrance. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount. SUMMARY:(SOLD OUT) The JACK Quartet: Modern Medieval
DESCRIPTION:Select another Angel’s Share event (Concerts in the Catacombs) in the summer series. \nYou may join the waitlist below. \nMake sure you never miss out on tickets again! Green-Wood members get access to tickets weeks before the general public. Join today. \nThe JACK Quartet were called “superheroes of the new music world” by The Boston Globe\, and there could be no more apt description for this endlessly adventurous ensemble. They’ve played pieces completely in the dark\, performed on a raft in the middle of a lake\, and more. For The Angel’s Share\, they will play an extraordinary program that follows a musical thread from medieval plainsong through to the present day\, drawing sonic similarities from wildly divergent works and echoing the timelessness of the space surrounding them. \nThe Program: Solage – Fumeux Fume part Fumee; Rodericus – Angelorum Psalat arr. Christopher Otto; Thomas Morley – Cristes Crosse; Chaya Czernowin – String Quartet; Brian Ferneyhough – Dum Transisset; Marc Sabat – Jean-Phillipe Rameau \nThe Performers: Christopher Otto\, violin; Austin Wulliman\, violin; John Pickford Richards\, viola; Jay Campbell\, cello \nThe Angel’s Share\, a new series of opera and chamber music concerts\, takes place in Green-Wood’s Catacombs. One of the oldest structures in the 478-acre National Historic Landmark Cemetery\, the Catacombs were built in the 1850s and are normally closed to the public. The series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel\, thus going to the angels. \nEach performance includes a pre-concert reception at sunset overlooking New York harbor and the Manhattan skyline. \n$75 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $80 for non-members \nPLEASE NOTE: Ticketholders must be 21 years or older. \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n\nNot a Member?\nNew or renewing members are entitled to one free tour ticket a year!

DESCRIPTION: \n \n \n \n \nEach year in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada\, a towering figure made of wicker known as “The Man” is ceremoniously set ablaze at the culmination of Burning Man\, the iconoclastic festival of community and art. The Wicker Man\, however\, dates back to the ancient Celtic world\, when the Druids burned these giant figures in effigy\, purportedly sometimes containing human sacrifices. This lecture\, led by former lawyer turned religious studies scholar Amy Slonaker\, explores the history and modern revival of the Wicker Man in neo-pagan rites and pop culture events and where legend and fact diverge. \n \n$10 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $15 for non-members \n \nClick here for more Morbid Anatomy at Green-Wood events. \n \nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMobile users: Please tap here to buy tickets.\n \n\nNot a Member?\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \nAlready a Member?\nClick the “Enter promotional code here (members\, use your ID#)” link in the bottom right corner of the ticket box and enter your ID number to apply your ticket discount.
