SUMMARY:A Lament for Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Performances will take place September 19th and 26th\, from 12-3 pm. The program will repeat three times each day\, beginning at the top of the hour (12 pm 1 pm\, and 2 pm). Seating is limited and on a first come\, first seated basis. An RSVP does not guarantee a seat. Attendees can only attend one performance an afternoon\, and will need to queue in line (keeping a safe distance) before each performance. No chairs or blankets permitted. \n\n\n\nIn times of turmoil\, music has a unique ability to unite us\, and remind us of the things that truly matter. Green-Wood\, in partnership with our friends at Death of Classical\, is honored to present a quartet of members of The Harlem Chamber Players\, performing music by George Walker and Florence Price. The performances take place atop the Hill of Graves\, with sweeping views of Green-Wood’s idyllic landscape\, and are free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nThe quartet will perform George Walker’s String Quartet No. 1 and Florence Price’s String Quartet in G major. Walker’s piece includes his profound Lyric – originally titled Lament – which was written in memory of his grandmother\, who had been a slave. Price’s quartet\, like all of her works\, has a sound that is at once timeless and familiar\, seamlessly incorporating African-American spirituals\, European classical traditions\, and her own unique musical voice. \n\n\n\nPerformances are located near the intersection of Meadow and Garland Avenues. To reach the site\, look for signage starting at the main entrance and pick up a copy of the Visitors Map from a security guard or download this handy map. It is a 15-minute walk from Green-Wood’s Main Entrance. \n\n\n\nSocial distancing will be enforced at each performance. Attendees must wear masks and keep a distance of 6 feet from one another. \n\n\n\nFree\, but RSVP is recommended. Please consider a donation to help support free and low cost programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nClick here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:A Body in a Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: The performance will start 30-minutes earlier than originally scheduled at 5:30 PM. \n\n\n\nCheck-in will begin at 4:30 PM. We recommend arriving before 5:10 PM as the performance site is a 20-minute walk from the main entrance. \n\n\n\nAmerican cemeteries of the nineteenth century served a similar purpose to today’s public parks\, as they once saw visitors picnicking on the grass\, strolling down meandering paths\, and socializing together as families. In the last century\, however\, these spaces have become more utilitarian in nature and often lack public engagement beyond funerals and grieving. Graveyard Shift\, a collaboration between Green-Wood and Pioneer Works\, proposes a new way of interacting with the space of the Cemetery by activating it through sight\, sound\, and movement. \n\n\n\nA Body in a Cemetery is a new place-inspired performance conceived by internationally acclaimed artist Eiko Otake. It is presented as part of this year’s Graveyard Shift series. \n\n\n\nFrom the artist: I have no intention to offer a theatrical production. My performance announcement is my promise to be there and to offer my body for a duration of time\, together with other visitors. My lone body will mark the place and the time when audiences can gather to meditate on how landscapes hold not only the deaths of people throughout history\, but also the flow of constant lives and deaths of all species. We will observe the Cemetery carefully and actively so we can hear the transformation of lives and deaths. \n\n\n\nClick here for our inclement weather policy. \n\n\n\nPlease note that we are unable to offer a member discount on this event. We apologize for any inconvenience. \n\n\n\nAbout the ArtistEiko Otake is a choreographer and performer who has spent decades practicing dying and mourning for the dead. A Body in a Cemetery will be the latest manifestation of her solo project A Body in Places\, which began in 2014 as a twelve-hour solo performance at Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station. Various iterations of the project have continued since then\, including a performance as part of The Hiroshima Panels exhibition at Pioneer Works in 2015\, which was simultaneous with an exhibition of photographs of Eiko shot by William Johnston\, A Body in Fukushima. Eiko performed A Body in Places last at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for three days in 2017. Other reflections on death include Offering at six Manhattan parks following 9-11\, as well as Duet Project\, which includes four partners who are now deceased. \n\n\n\nAbout Pioneer WorksPioneer Works is a cultural center based in Red Hook\, Brooklyn that is devoted to building community through the arts and sciences. Through a broad range of educational programs\, performances\, residencies\, and exhibitions\, Pioneer Works transcends disciplinary boundaries to foster a community where alternative modes of thought are activated and supported. We strive to make culture accessible to all. \n\n\n\nMandatory Safety Protocols– Face coverings must be worn at all times– Maintain 6 feet from other visitors and Cemetery staff and ambassadors– Complete a health questionnaire in advance of the performance– Sit only in designated areas and follow directions given by Cemetery staff and ambassadors– Maps and a program will be emailed in advance of the performance– Visitors will need to walk 20 minutes to and from the performance site over hilly terrain\, proper footwear is recommended. For those with mobility issues\, transportation can be provided from the Main Entrance.

SUMMARY:On African American Death Practices Part I
DESCRIPTION:Death is the great equalizer\, right? Why then have funerary and burial practices been racially segregated in the United States for centuries? Why does death care continue to be one of the most segregated sectors of the American economy? This discussion uses these questions as a starting point to trace the evolution of African American funeral practices through key moments in history and continuing shifts. We will also discuss the current state of affairs and what it might suggest about the changing landscape of America’s death culture more broadly. In Part I we will focus primarily on the history of African American death practices. \n\n\n\nThis program is presented as part of a new Death Education series at Green-Wood\, Death & Us. Death is the great universal\, but the ways in which the dead are grieved and memorialized vary across racial\, cultural\, and economic divides in the United States. This series brings together a myriad of voices—from historians and preservationists to activists and funeral practitioners—to explore how diverse communities mourn and commemorate the departed from our nation’s founding to today. \n\n\n\nFree. A Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\nClick here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:History Happy Hour: Hidden Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood isn’t wanting for extraordinary and monumental tombs\, but many of its most remarkable residents lay buried under unmarked\, modest\, or sunken stones. It’s no wonder that visitors spend so much time looking for graves that are often easy to miss! You’ll learn about some of Green-Wood’s lesser-known—but equally fascinating—monuments across our 478 acres. Highlights will include suffragist Elizabeth Tilton\, whose stone is marked simply as “Grandmother;” Robert “Little Dougie” Spedden\, a child survivor of the Titanic; and teenage military cadet Andrew Culver Jr.\, whose marble gravestone is one of the Cemetery’s most underrated gems. \n\n\n\nWhile we can’t actually bring the bar or the drinks to you\, we can offer some history on tap! Bring your own beverage–why not try our recommended cocktail of the evening–and raise a glass to the past as we stay connected through our latest series\, History Happy Hour. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. A Zoom link and recipe will be in your confirmation email upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. By September\, offspring of these nesting birds will be on their own. Returning warblers will be in their less flamboyant fall plumage. Large numbers of blackbirds\, flycatchers\, sparrows\, vireos\, and swallows will also be passing through. By October\, waterfowl are returning\, and we’ll look for raptors heading south. November will bring back our overwintering feathered denizens from the north. \n\n\n\nAll walks are at a slow pace on easy to moderate terrain\, but proper\, close toed footwear is suggested. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the Main Entrance on 25th Street or as a printable PDF here. \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are $20/$15 for members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourtesy of Jennifer Kepler.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. SUMMARY:The Lost Art of Dying
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons and The Green-Wood Cemetery \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat can medieval manuscripts teach us today about living and dying well? Join Columbia Univ. physician L.S. Dugdale as she explores these texts and speaks from her new book The Lost Art of Dying. \n\n\n\nFor more than 500 years\, the ‘ars moriendi’ or ‘art of dying’ genre of literature dominated living and dying in the West. These handbooks on the preparation for death spanned languages\, religions\, cultural contexts\, and continents. In her new book\, The Lost Art of Dying\, Dugdale asks what it might look like to revive this forgotten wisdom. How might we learn from the past in order to move toward a future in which we live well in order to die well? \n\n\n\nDr. L.S. Dugdale is a primary care physician and professor at Columbia University\, where she is Director of the Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She has published widely in both the popular and academic press. Her first book\, Dying in the Twenty-First Century\, provides the scholarly foundation for her most recent book\, The Lost Art of Dying: Reviving Forgotten Wisdom. \n\n\n\n\n\nDiscussion will be facilitated by Amy Cunningham\, Funeral Director and Death Educator at Green-Wood. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP (Free)

SUMMARY:On African American Death Practices Part II
DESCRIPTION:Death is the great equalizer\, right? Why then have funerary and burial practices been racially segregated in the United States for centuries? Why does death care continue to be one of the most segregated sectors of the American economy? This discussion uses these questions as a starting point to trace the evolution of African American funeral practices through key moments in history and continuing shifts. We will also discuss the current state of affairs and what it might suggest about the changing landscape of America’s death culture more broadly. In Part II we will focus our discussion on contemporary African American death practices. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be led by University of Chicago doctoral candidate\, LaShaya Howie\, whose studies focus on contemporary death practices in the US; cultural histories of African American funerals and memorials; theories of Blackness and death; and materiality\, mourning\, and grief. \n\n\n\n\n\nFree. DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. \n\n\n\nJust because it’s winter\, doesn’t mean that there aren’t interesting birds to discover in Green-Wood. For some bird species that migrate south after the breeding season\, Brooklyn is their Miami during the cold months. Spend the early morning exploring the cemetery\, looking for overwintering waterfowl\, nuthatches\, woodpeckers\, sparrows\, finches and any half-hardy birds that decided to stick around. By February we’ll see some of the early north-bound birds beginning to trickle back into the area. \n\n\n\nAll walks are at a slow pace on easy to moderate terrain\, but proper\, close toed footwear is suggested. SUMMARY:Pages from the Past: NYC's Greatest Diarist Dishes
DESCRIPTION:Everyone loves a little gossip\, right? And no one could dish it like George Templeton Strong. Once a well-connected lawyer and a trustee of both Trinity Church and Columbia College (but also a man who reflected the racial\, ethnic\, and religious prejudices of his time)\, he is now perhaps best known for the extensive private diary (never actually intended for publication) that he kept from 1835 until his death in 1875. Strong’s writings detail his frank observations of high society and the people of NYC who he knew intimately (many of whom wound up at Green-Wood)\, as well as his visits to the Cemetery. Matt Dellinger\, writer and student of history\, will join Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman to discuss Strong’s candid observations and his unique insider’s view of history. \n\n\n\nMatt Dellinger has written for The New Yorker\, the Oxford American\, The New York Times\, and The Atlantic\, and has reported on transportation and planning for WNYC. He is the author of Interstate 69: The Unfinished History of the Last Great American Highway and is at work on his second book\, about Brooklyn in the Civil War. \n\n\n\nThis conversation is part of our series of virtual programs about the history of Green-Wood and its permanent residents\, Zooming in on History. \n\n\n\n\n\n$9 / $4 for members. DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed. There are plans to reschedule it at a later date. Join our email list for the latest event and other news from Green-Wood. \n\n\n\nThis special edition of the popular Death Cafe is inspired by artist Heidi Lau. She will begin the evening discussing her art practice and the importance of hot pots in Chinese culture as an opportunity for nourishment\, conversation\, and reflection. Led by Death Cafe moderator\, Bethany Tabor\, participants will be encouraged to make their own hot pots (Don’t worry! Lau will send some how-to tips)\, while taking part in intimate group conversations about their thoughts and feelings on death. As always\, the Death Cafe is an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. \n\n\n\nThis program is presented as part of a new Death Education series at Green-Wood\, Death & Us.
