Peek inside massive stone slabs and elaborate iron-wrought doors as you step inside stunning examples of Green-Wood’s distinct architecture. This self-guided tour will include the Egyptian Revival tomb of John Taylor Johnston\, an early president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the ornamental Nichols mausoleum which served as a kind of hostel for Nichols friends and family; the imposing  mausoleum of the Dewey’s\, a family of early American settlers;  and several more . At each stop\, “house” docents will offer a glimpse into the lives of the personalities who now rest in these opulent structures. Bring your sneakers and walk the route\, or use the Green-Wood trolley for “Hop on\, hop off” service between each site. The Green-Wood Inventors Club combines the great outdoors\, history\, and modern technology to create fun workshops for families. Learn about famous scientists\, designers\, and inventors by exploring their life and work. Hands on projects will connect these fascinating personalities to our modern times. The Inventors Club will be stationed in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel\, and at the Green-Wood monument of the personality we’re exploring. Visit both locations to learn about history and create something cool\, too. Workshops are free and run from noon to 3:00 p.m. \nGreen-Wood Inventors Club is presented with Sunset Spark\, an organization offering free\, high-quality classes for the immigrant community of Sunset Park. Sunset Spark involves kids\, adults and families  in a wide variety of science and engineering subjects like neuroscience\, software engineering\, and physical computing. \n\nClub de Inventores Green-Wood \nAprenda sobre Isabella Goodwin\, primera mujer detective de Nueva York! DESCRIPTION: \nIn Mexico there is a rapidly growing cult – that of Saint Death. This female grim reaper\, considered a saint by followers but Satanic by the Catholic Church\, is worshipped by people whose lives are filled with danger and/or violence- criminals\, gang members\, transvestites\, the sick\, drug addicts\, and families living in rough neighborhoods. “La Santa Muerte” examines the origins of the cult and takes us on a tour of the altars\, jails\, and neighborhoods in Mexico where the saint’s most devoted followers can be found. Gather in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel for a screening of the film followed by discussion with the film’s director\, Eva Aridjis and Common Shade’s host Evan Michelson. Eva Aridjis is a Mexican filmmaker who has produced and directed several award-winning feature films\, including the documentaries “Niños de la Calle” (Children of the Street)\, “La Santa Muerte” (Saint Death) and “Chuy\, El hombre lobo” (Chuy\, The Wolf Man) and the narrative films “The Favor” and “Los Ojos Azules” (The Blue Eyes). \n \nMorbid Anatomy Museum and Green-Wood present Common Shade – a dialogue existing on the borderlands between the living and the dead. Hosted in Green-Wood’s intimate Historic Chapel\, Common Shade will cultivate a social space for death – a place to examine death’s prevalence in our lives\, and its shifting place in history\, art\, culture\, and society. Drawing from Green-Wood’s bucolic setting and using history as our anchor\, each night’s presentations will include dialogue and interviews with guests. Together with artists\, practitioners\, scholars\, and peers\, Common Shade discussions will explore our humble acknowledgments of and engagements with death. \n \n$25 for non-members / $20 for members of Green-Wood\, BHS and the Morbid Anatomy Museum. DESCRIPTION: \nHistorian\, author\, and professor Edward T. O’Donnell speaks about his new book on the influential reformer Henry George and the tumultuous period in America known as the Gilded Age (1870-1900). As financial fortunes were soaring ever-higher for a small portion of society\, Henry George emerged in the 1880s as a prominent reformer warning against the threats of increasing wealth disparity\, inequality\, and corporate influence in politics. He played a key role in popularizing some of the foundational ideas of progressivism that shaped U.S. social and economic policy in the 20th century. Today\, George’s philosophy is more relevant than ever as America confronts similar questions about poverty\, inequality\, and corporate power in what some have called a Second Gilded Age. After O’Donnell’s enlightening discussion\, take a trolley ride through Green-Wood to visit the monuments of Henry George and other influential reformers. \n \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free talk in the historic Green-Wood chapel.\nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. And just like any other visual art\, popularity of styles shift and change with the cultural at large. Join Eva Bowerman\, Chair of the New York Chapter of the Association for Gravestone Studies\, for a look at American monuments and memorialization through the years. Why were certain styles more popular than others\, and what outside forces influenced prevailing memorialization customs? Eva’s background in art history informs her view of the shifting popularity of styles and customs regarding tombstones and monuments. She’ll examine the American monument landscape at large\, and touch on specific examples you can find in Green-Wood. After the presentation\, a discussion will follow with Eva and Common Shade moderator Evan Michelson. \n \nMorbid Anatomy Museum and Green-Wood present Common Shade – a dialogue existing on the borderlands between the living and the dead. Hosted in Green-Wood’s intimate Historic Chapel\, Common Shade will cultivate a social space for death – a place to examine death’s prevalence in our lives\, and its shifting place in history\, art\, culture\, and society. Drawing from Green-Wood’s bucolic setting and using history as our anchor\, each night’s presentations will include dialogue and interviews with guests.
