DESCRIPTION:The Creighton Monument\, as it appeared in the 19th century.\nGreen-Wood Cemetery and SABR-NYC Invite You on a One-Time Only Private TourTo See Early Baseball Graves and Rare Baseball Items from Green-Wood’s ArchivesTo Help Raise Money to Restore the Creighton Monument\nHis death at 21 shocked the baseball world. He never signed a contract. He is not a member of the baseball Hall of Fame. But in the early 1860s Jim Creighton revolutionized the game of baseball. He threw the first fastball\, making the pitcher a weapon and transforming the game itself from a hitting contest into today’s sublime battle for control of the strike zone. His baseball-themed grave monument was\, from its earliest days– and is – a place of pilgrimage for ballplayers and lovers of the game. \nToday\, Jim needs us. Over the years\, the marble pedestal and “lemon peel” baseball that once crowned Creighton’s grave have disappeared. Green-Wood Cemetery has established a fund to recarve this missing piece and restore this monument to its original state. To date\, enough money has been raised that we are optimistic that with a little help from SABR-NYC and friends\, we can reach our goal of completing the work – and inviting donors back for the unveiling — in 2014. \n \nA sketch of the Creighton monument restoration.The original top of the Creighton Monument.\nAt Jim Creighton’s grave for the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of his death in 2012.\n \nOn October 18\, 2013\, exactly a century and a year after Jim Creighton’s death\, Green-Wood will offer a unique tour for SABR members and their friends. Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman and author Tom Gilbert will lead a tour of the graves of Creighton\, Henry Chadwick\, James Whyte Davis\, Charles Ebbets and other early baseball heroes. They will give graveside talks on topics such as the Mystery of Jim Creighton’s Demise\, Baseball’s Baffling Paternity Case\, and What Happened at Charles Ebbets’ Funeral That May Have Doomed the Brooklyn Dodgers. Guests will also be treated to a rare look into Green-Wood’s archives\, including a great Brookyn Dodger letterhead\, with a note signed by Charles Ebbets\, and a note signed by President Theodore Roosevelt\, who dubbed Henry Chadwick “The Father of Baseball\,” as well as other signatures of early baseball greats. \nThe tour is limited to 60 participants (Warning: this event is expected to sell out quickly). Guests will ride in comfort in Green-Wood’s trolley. The tour will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Friday\, October 18th\, 2013.  Along with a bit of baseball time travel\, guests will enjoy stunning fall foliage\, breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline\, and the sunset over New York Harbor. Afterwards\, please join us for – what else? — beer and hotdogs (the inventor of the hot dog is at Green-Wood!) in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel.  \nTickets to the tour are $125\, of which all but $25 is tax-deductible. So let us take you on an exploratory trolley ride through some of Brooklyn’s most fun and fascinating subjects.  \nThis fall\, we offer you Brooklyn Backstory: Hot Diggity Dogs! – an immersive look into America’s favorite ballpark snack. We’ll begin at Brooklyn Historical Society for a peek at some hot dog-related treasures from the archives (we promise we won’t show you a 100-year-old hotdog). Then hop on Green-Wood’s trolley with journalist Sarah Zorn – she knows all the best hot dog hot spots! You’ll motor around the borough and make stops at several modern hotdog purveyors for delicious samples. Then it’s back to Green-Wood for the crown jewel – a visit to the Charles Feltman mausoleum; He’s the man who had the stroke of hot dog-inventing genius way back when at Coney Island. DESCRIPTION: \n \nLearn the fascinating story of Charles Tinker – Civil War telegrapher and confidant for President Abraham Lincoln. Tinker\, who has been interred at Green-Wood since 1917\, has a fascinating story that had been lost to the annals of time until it was discovered by award-winning author (and Tinker descendant by marriage) Ronda Rich. She will lead you through her discoveries that culminated in a visit to the Tinker Family lot at Green-Wood.  \nIn our Historic Chapel\, Rich will delve into Tinker’s astounding past\, using fascinating first-hand resources\, like Tinker’s personal diaries\, that have been handed down through the family. After the talk\, board Green-Wood’s trolley with Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman and Ronda Rich for a Civil War tour highlighted by a visit to the Tinker Family lot. \n \nThis event has two parts\, with separate tickets for each part: \n\nThe free talk in the historic Green-Wood chapel.\n \nA guided trolley tour immediately following the talk. At the stunning Pierrepont memorial\, you’ll learn about Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont and his early-19th century downtown Brooklyn distillery\, plus other permanent residents with whiskey connections\, including the only casualty in the contentious Whiskey Wars of the mid-1800s.  \nAfter the tour\, climb aboard Green-Wood’s trolley and head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard! They’ve been making gin and whiskey in their historic building since 2010. You’ll see how they create their modern whiskey before tasting some of the delectable product. \n$30 for members of the Historic Fund/$35 for nonmembers.
