We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. Join our historian\, Jeff Richman\, for a virtual tour of some of these individuals: the man sent by Louis Daguerre (who invented photography) to introduce his miraculous invention to America; the savant whose gravestone claims that he was the first to take a photograph of the human face\,the man who met Daguerre in France and became a pioneer of American photography (hint: he’s also known for the invention of the telegraph!)\, and many more. Each meeting of the Secret Mausoleum Music Club is a unique\, one-night experience\, featuring mausoleums rarely open to the public\,  performance stages curated by Death of Classical\, and entertainment provided by Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. We can’t tell you much more\, you’ll have to experience it for yourself! \n\n\n\nImportant things to note: \n\n\n\nThis program is for adults\, 21 years and older. Arrive at the time on your ticket (either 6:30pm\, 6:45pm\, or 7:00pm).The music begins at 7:30pm\, and you will be able to move between the performance stages.The mausoleums will be open for you to peek inside of the entire night. Bring a blanket to get comfortable while listening to the music; chairs are prohibited. Snacks and water are welcome\, but no picnics or alcohol are permitted. The walk to the performance site is 15-20 minutes\, and goes over hilly and sometimes uneven terrain. Who wants to discuss that morbid stuff anyway? Green-Wood’s book club\, Mortality & Me\, will help make death\, dying\, and end-of-life matters an easier subject to talk about through compelling books that tackle these topics head on.  \n\n\n\nFor this book club session\, we will be discussing Bernice McFadden’s Gathering of Waters. Narrated by Money\, Mississippi\, this engrossing historical speculative novel weaves the real-life story of Emmett Till\, a 14-year-old Chicagoan child who was brutally murdered in 1955. Till’s murder in the town of Money helped ignite the Civil Rights Movement. And don’t worry—you don’t need to read the book in its entirety. Three designated sections\, which will be the basis of our conversation\, will be emailed in advance. \n\n\n\nMortality & Me’s moderator\, Josie Wells\, is the creator and facilitator of Footnotes & Indexes Book Club whose mission is to connect people to literature that feeds their curiosity and articulates their lived experiences as a form of community activism. We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. SUMMARY:Annie Tinker: Tireless Suffragist and Women’s Rights Champion
DESCRIPTION:Despite being born into wealth\, Annie Tinker (1884-1924) was not one to rest on her family’s laurels. She used her privilege to contribute time and resources to social movements—with women’s rights resting particularly close to her heart. She regularly led an all-women’s cavalry unit through Central Park and in women’s suffrage parades\, lobbying that they be sent off to fight in World War I. In fact\, she volunteered as a nurse in Europe during World War I. After her untimely death at age 39\, a bequest in her will financed a foundation to provide stipends to older women so that they could remain independent in their later years. Attendees will be checked in by name. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly-Spring Migration \n\n\n\nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of pine warblers and drumming pronouncements of woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip farther north as well as arriving herons and egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n\n\n\nPeak Spring Migration \n\n\n\nFrom ruby-throated hummingbirds to over twenty species of colorful wood warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the most active time of day for birds. \n\n\n\nSummer Birding \n\n\n\nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant.
