SUMMARY:Birding in Peace
DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful early morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. \n\n\n\nJust because it’s winter\, doesn’t mean that there aren’t interesting birds to discover in Green-Wood. For some bird species that migrate south after the breeding season\, Brooklyn is their Miami during the cold months. \n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: $20\, $16 for members \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWalking Tour(see details below)\n\n\n\n\n\nSpend the early morning exploring the cemetery\, looking for overwintering waterfowl\, nuthatches\, woodpeckers\, sparrows\, finches\, and any half-hardy birds that decided to stick around. By February we’ll see some of the early north-bound birds beginning to trickle back into the area. \n\n\n\nAll walks are at a slow pace on easy to moderate terrain\, but proper\, closed-toe footwear is suggested. \n\n\n\nPlease note that if only 1 ticket shows as available during the purchase process that is the last ticket available. \n\n\n\nBefore Purchasing A Ticket\, Please Note:\n\n\n\n\nAttendees must follow ALL instructions and guidance from Cemetery staff and ambassadors.\n\n\n\nTickets: There is no need to print tickets! Attendees will be checked in by name.\n\n\n\nWhere To Go: Check-in takes place at the meadow near the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th Street).\n\n\n\nFor Your Safety: We strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable footwear. The route includes several steep hills\, some stairs\, as well as grassy and uneven terrain. There is no place to sit down during the tour. Due to the challenging nature of the route\, this tour is not ADA compliant and is not recommended for children under the age of 10.\n\n\n\nA Little More About Safety: Unless it is a medical emergency\, it is not possible to leave during the tour. Please consider your own abilities–as well as those in your party–before purchasing tickets.\n\n\n\nRefunds and exchanges: Ticket sales are final. No exchanges or refunds unless the tour is canceled. If a rain date is scheduled\, tickets will be honored only on that date.\n\n\n\nInclement Weather Policy: We monitor the weather throughout the day for the best chance of proceeding with the tour\, and will not make a final decision until at least 3 hours before the start of the tour. Cancellations will be announced via Eventbrite email blasts\, so check your email and spam folders.\n\n\n\nFeeling Sick? Stay home if you are feeling sick or running a fever.\n\n\n\n\nNot a Member?\n\n\n\nClick here for all of our membership levels and information. \n\n\n\nAlready a Member?\n\n\n\nClick the gray tickets button to activate the Eventbrite pop-up\, then click Enter promo code. DESCRIPTION:Wouldn’t it be great to have a book club where you could just read and enjoy the company of other bibliophiles—without any homework? Silent Book Clubs are taking place across the country for friends and strangers to gather\, share what they’re learning between the pages\, and settle in for an hour of silent\, sustained reading. At the Silent Book Club of Death\, we do things a little differently—reading books that surround themes of grief\, loss\, and mortality. There are only three chapters in the entire country and Green-Wood is proud to serve as one of the New York chapters’ venues. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. SUMMARY:Living Laboratory: Green-Wood’s 2024 Environmental Research Fellows
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, Green-Wood’s 2024 Environmental Research Fellows have been hard at work\, using the Cemetery as their living laboratory. Join us for a special virtual presentation of their methodologies and findings.  \n\n\n\nIn hopes to build a more climate resilient city forest\, Dr. Nina Bassuk of Cornell University’s Urban Horticulture Institute tested tree species that may be better adapted to our warmer\, drier climate. Her team tracked the success of hybrid oaks that had previously been developed at Cornell and planted additional oaks for trial. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: Free. Registration required. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual EventA Zoom link will be in your confirmation email upon registration.\n\n\n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, Dr. Emily Herstoff and Dr. Michael Tessler focused on the tiny insects and fungi that live on Green-Wood’s trees—comparing their presence on native and non-native species—to assess impacts on biodiversity. Learn how their findings will help guide Green-Wood (and other urban forests) grow healthy\, resilient ecosystems into the future! \n\n\n\nThe presentation will be led by Sara Evans\, Green-Wood’s director of living collections and curator.  \n\n\n\nThese researchers were the recipients of Green-Wood’s Environmental Research Fellowship Award which was officially launched in 2022. You can read more about their projects here. \n\n\n\nFree. Registration required. Please consider a $10 donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.
