DESCRIPTION:The Death Café is inspired by the centuries-old European salon (or café)\, an informal gathering to discuss philosophical\, political or scientific ideas. In 2011\, British entrepreneur Jon Underwood brought this concept to discussions of the most universal topic of all: death. Underwood’s intention was to provide an opportunity to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” Today\, there are over 4\,400 Death Cafes in 26 countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood is proud to host monthly gatherings of the Death Café here in our beautiful\, modern chapel. Amy Cunningham\, death educator and creator of the Brooklyn-based blog TheInspiredFuneral.com\, invites participants to share their thoughts and feelings on death. It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges\, without an agenda. They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. DESCRIPTION: \nFirefighting was an exceptionally dangerous occupation in nineteenth-century New York and Brooklyn. There were little to no fire safety regulations\, and up until 1865 Brooklyn’s fire companies were manned by volunteers – often more focused on inter-company rivalries than in putting out the fires.  \n \nJoin Jeff Richman\, Green-Wood’s Historian\, for our first-ever tour to uncover the stories of these courageous men and their sacrifices. Visit the elaborate Firemen’s Monument (1848) that honors the death of thirty men who died in the line of duty\, plus the symbolic brownstone fire hydrants that mark the lot of the infamous Americus 6 Fire Company\, as well as first responders who died in the 9/11 attacks.  \n \n$20 for members of Green-Wood and BHS / $25 for non-members. \n \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s “permanent residents” with whiskey connections\, including the one and only casualty of the Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the late 1860s and early 1870s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard where visitors will see first-hand how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four delectable varieties. \n \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nBirds of Early-Spring Migration\nSunday\, April 8\, 15\, 22\, & 29 from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nMay 5 and 6 (Sat/Sun)\, 13 (Sun)\, 19 and 20 (Sat/Sun)\, & 27 (Sun) from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM \nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding Sundays\nJune & July from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM (except July 1st)\nSunday August 5th from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM & August 19th from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nMay 5 and 6 (Sat/Sun)\, 13 (Sun)\, 19 and 20 (Sat/Sun)\, & 27 (Sun) from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM \nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. DESCRIPTION: \nTrees New York’s Tree Stewardship Training is designed to train and mobilize New Yorkers so that they can play an active role in supporting the health of our urban forest. Trees New York’s Environmental Educators teach lessons on the value of a healthy urban forest and the importance of volunteer efforts. Following each lesson\, volunteers steward street trees. Trees New York’s Environmental Educators work alongside volunteers to guide their stewardship efforts and answer questions. \nTrees New York works with both youth and adult volunteers and works throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Our target neighborhoods for 2018 include: Greenpoint\, Western Queens and Northern Manhattan.  \nVolunteer stewardship activities include:  \nTree bed clean up and soil cultivation – In addition to being unsightly\, compacted soil and litter block the movement of oxygen\, water and nutrients to tree roots. Volunteers remove litter and weeds from tree beds and loosen up the surface soil with hand cultivators\nWatering Trees – New York City street trees live in permanent drought conditions. All trees\, especially newly planted trees\, need thorough and deep watering during the spring and summer. Volunteers water trees using buckets and hoses. \nMulching – Mulch conserves water\, moderates soil temperatures\, improves soil structure and mitigates damage from dogs\, people\, de-icing salts and cleaning agents. Volunteers mulch trees with mulch or woodchips. \nTree Bed Gardening – Flowers beautify the streetscape\, add enriching organic matter to the soil and help deter people from walking on tree beds. In the spring\, volunteers plant annual flowers such as impatiens\, coleus and begonias and in the fall\, we plant bulbs such as muscari\, crocus and daffodil. \n*** \nGive Trees a Chance: Environmental Justice in South Brooklyn  \nGreen-Wood’s own neighborhood\, Sunset Park\, is one of the fastest growing and most diverse neighborhoods in all of New York City. Yet\, it also faces serious environmental challenges. Car and truck exhaust from the Gowanus Expressway and industrial emissions from its small manufacturers create higher than average levels of harmful air pollution. Street trees to the rescue! They’re nature’s miracle workers: they intercept and absorb storm water runoff\, provide oxygen\, fight climate change\, and lower air temperatures. \nThe 6\,500 street trees of Sunset Park have a job to do. And they need all the help they can get! Together with TreesNY\, Green-Wood’s horticulture staff is training a team of tree advocates! If you care about the environment\, join us. DESCRIPTION:Before our gates open to the general public\, birding expert Rob Jett leads these peaceful Sunday morning walking tours to discover the many birds that call Green-Wood home. Green-Wood’s official birding checklist is available to pick up from the security guard at the main entrance on 25th Street or to print here. Comfortable footwear is recommended. \n \nBirds of Early-Spring Migration\nSunday\, April 8\, 15\, 22\, & 29 from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nOur April tours will be a feast for the ears and eyes with the trilling song of Pine Warblers and drumming pronouncements of Woodpeckers on newly blossoming trees (including magnolias\, maples\, quinces\, and dogwoods). We’ll discover thousands of songbirds resting before their trip north as well as arriving herons & egrets at Green-Wood’s glacial ponds. \n \nPeak Spring Migration Birding\nMay 5 and 6 (Sat/Sun)\, 13 (Sun)\, 19 and 20 (Sat/Sun)\, & 27 (Sun) from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM \nFrom Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to over 20 species of colorful wood-warblers\, our peak migration tours will feature many of the 163 bird species that have been recorded at Green-Wood during the month of May. Beginning just after sunrise\, we will experience spring’s dawn chorus at the active time of day for birds. \n \nSummer Birding Sundays\nJune & July from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM (except July 1st)\nSunday August 5th from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM & August 19th from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM \nIn July we should see the offspring of our resident red-tailed hawk bravely preparing to leave the nest. Warbler songs will be replaced by chirring Cicadas and the tweets of fledgling birds. Butterflies and dragonflies are abundant. By late-July\, expect the arrival of the first southbound migrants. \n \nGrab a copy of our Bird Checklist before you begin. Join today. \nThe Washington Post writes of twin sister piano duo Christina and Michelle Naughton\, “They have to be heard to be believed.” And indeed\, the pair performs with an almost inconceivably telepathic connection. For The Angel’s Share\, the Naughtons will play a program bookended by Leonard Bernstein\, in celebration of his 100th birthday year (and because his final resting place is but a stone’s throw from the Catacombs). In between\, the sisters will alternate between American and French composers\, including Ravel’s shimmering Ma mère l’Oye and Debussy’s En Blanc et Noir. \nThe Program: Bernstein: “Overture to Candide;” Ravel: Ma mère l’Oye; Nancarrow: Sonatine; Poulenc: Sonata for Four Hands; Bolcom: Recuerdos; Debussy: En Blanc et Noir; Copland: “El Salon” arranged Bernstein  \nThe Performers: Christina Naughton\, piano; Michelle Naughton\, piano \nThe Angel’s Share\, a new series of opera and chamber music concerts\, takes place in Green-Wood’s Catacombs. One of the oldest structures in the 478-acre National Historic Landmark Cemetery\, the Catacombs were built in the 1850s and are normally closed to the public.
